Course overview
This course is designed for people seeking a career in the hospitality or tourism industry. In particular this course focuses on the Event Management field, concentrating on highly specialised technical event management skills with a strategic research, planning and communication focus.
The course concentrates on the skills required in the organisation of events and gives students many practical opportunities to run both on-campus and off-campus events.

What employment opportunities will I have?
This course may lead to employment in a range of organisations where event management takes place and such organisations are diverse in nature. Examples include professional conference organisers, exhibition and event management companies, sporting associations, community organisations, hospitality and cultural venues.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain skills in planning event concepts, managing event staging, accounting for events, gaining sponsorship, marketing and public relations to name a few.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Advacned Diploma Of Events. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
Kangan Institute students who graduate with a Advanced Diploma of Events are able to take advantage of the 'pathways' arrangement with both LaTrobe University and Victoria University (VU). Students can receive advanced standing (credit) in the form of both priority entry and course credit points towards a bachelor qualification. Each university study unit carries a credit point value.
As of 03/2010, students who have graduated with the Advanced Diploma of Events can utilise advanced standing pathways in the following bachelor degrees:
LaTrobe University
- Bachelor of Business (Tourism & Hospitality) [180 credit points]
- Bachelor of Business (Tourism Management) [165 credit points]
- Bachelor of Business (Sport & Leisure Management) [135 credit points]

Can I apply?
There are no set prerequisites for this course. However it is recommended that you have satisfactory numeracy and literacy skills to undertake this course. You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed VCE or an approved equivalent course and the satisfactory completion of the work requirements (eligibility to transfer); or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months)

How long is the course?
Classes for 2012 commence on 8th Feb with an Orientation Day for all new students, at 10am in D-118 Richards Restaurant.
You do not have to bring anything with you.
Time tables and all the necessary info will be provided to you on this day.
The Events Management course is delivered in 3 stages: stage 1 is delivered over 2 terms in the first year, students exiting at the end of 2 terms will be eligible for the Certificate III in Events. Stage 2 is delivered in Terms 3 and 4 of year 1; students exiting at this point will be awarded the Diploma of Events. The third stage is the Advanced Diploma of Events which will be completed in terms 1 and 2 of year 2.
The first year of study will see students working on a range of events both inside and outside the Institute while they study the theoretical background to events. In the second semester of year one, students will design their own event and run a major off-campus event. In the final semester students will write a business plan for their own major event or an event management company and this business plan will be entered into the Developing Tourism Leaders Awards.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information.

What will I study?
Ours is a small but dynamic department, offering students an individual approach to learning in a caring environment. Classes are a mix of practical activities and the theoretical course content, including industry familiarisations, excursions and on-site guest speakers, together with activities where students assist in the organization and running of events. In the second year students will design their own event company or event. Students are consistently engaged in hands-on learning and some of the recent meetings and event activities that have enhanced their learning include-:

- Catering and registration of the Design Students’ Conference at Southbank
