Course overview

This course gives you higher level skills, following on from the completion of a Certificate IV in Networking. It provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in planning, technical design, implementation and management of complex and high level ICT networks. This course is made up of 17 units of which 8 are core units.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

Text books may cost up to $300.00. It is recommended that you have an external USB hard disk of at least 80 GB capacity.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may lead to work in supervisory or management positions in areas such as E-Risk Manager, ICT Security Specialist, IT Security Administrator, IT Security Analyst or Engineer, Network Engineer, Network Security Analyst, Network Security Specialist.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills in a robust ICT technical base in the security of networks and systems, implementing risk management processes, implementing change management processes, building high security firewalls and managing business websites and servers.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Advanced Diploma of Information Technology (Network Security). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Kangan Institute students who graduate with a Diploma Information Technology (Network Security) are able to take advantage of the 'pathways' arrangement with La Trobe, Swinburne, Ballarat and Victoria Universities. Students can receive advanced standing (credit) in the form of both priority entry and course credit points towards a bachelor qualification. Each university study unit carries a credit point value.

As of 03/2010, students who have graduated with the Diploma Information Technology (Network Security) can utilise advanced standing pathways in the following bachelor degree:

- Bachelor of Computer Science [90 credit points]

Can I apply?

You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed Certificate IV in Information Technology (Networking) or equivalent; or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months.

How will I be selected for this course?

At an enrolment session you will have to complete a basic literacy and numeracy test. You will also be interviewed.

How long is the course?

The course spans over an extra 12 months on completion of the Certificate IV in Information Technology (Networking).

Where and how can I study?

You will study at the Broadmeadows Campus. The course can be completed studying either full time or part time. Classes are held during the day, some classes could be scheduled in the evenings pending on student needs.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information.

The course focuses on security of networks and systems, risk management, change management, firewalls, business websites and servers. Technologies include - Windows Server 2008, CISCO, Linux, IBM Systemi, VMWARE.
