Student Contact Hours

Diploma and advanced diploma students are no longer eligible for a concession or exemption of tuition fees however VET FEE HELP is available to eligible students. Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander students can continue accessing concession rates at all program levels (including diploma and advanced diploma).

If you have to undertake training as part of Skills Recognition, your tuition fees are charged according to the applicable rate per Student Contact Hour depending on your eligibility for government subsidised, Indigenous concession or full fees. What costs and other fees should I expect?

For a fee schedule, call us on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or (03) 9279 2222. Alternatively email enquiries@kangan.edu.au. There will be extra costs for reference books and materials of approximately $200 -$300 per semester.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course will give you opportunities for employment in a wide range of jobs in the legal field. Many of our graduates are currently employed as senior law clerks, paralegal and legal executives by: law firms, corporations, courts, government departments, conveyancing service providers and financial institutions.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain extensive training in the workings of today's professional legal office. You might be looking for your first job start, or you might be working already in a legal environment and want to improve or update your legal skills and be rewarded by a formal qualification. This course is suited for legal and para-legal executives and a range of other workers in the law field.

What qualifications will I receive?

When you successfully complete this course you will be awarded the Advanced Diploma of Legal Practice. The diploma meets the requirements for becoming a member of the Institute of Legal Executives (Victoria).

This Institute encourages career paths for legal office workers who are not solicitors but do important work in legal offices. You can phone the Institute of Legal Executives (Victoria) with your enquiries.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Kangan Institute students who graduate with an Advanced Diploma of Legal Practice are able to take advantage of the 'pathways' arrangement with Victoria University (VU). Students can receive advanced standing (credit) in the form of both priority entry and course credit points towards a bachelor qualification.

Students who have graduated with the Advanced Diploma of Business (Legal Practice) can utilise advanced standing pathways in the following Victoria University bachelor degrees:

- Bachelor of Arts (Criminal Justice Studies)
- Bachelor of Arts (Legal Studies)
Availability of places may be limited subject to demand in the future.

Students may aslo be elegible for pathways into the University of Ballarat's Bachelor of Applied Management.

Can I apply?

You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed a Diploma or an approved equivalent course and the work requirements; or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. The course is suitable for those already working in administration roles and are wishing to develop further knowledge and skills. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months).

All applicants for the course must apply through direct entry.

How will I be selected for this course?

All applicants need to particpate in an over the phone or in person information session. You may be required to complete a pre-selection form and be prepared to undertake a written test.

How long is the course?

The course is currently being offered via online delivery. The course can be completed in up to two years (if all units are undertaken when offered). Applicants currently working in the industry may be eligible for RPL, further decreasing the length of the course.

Please note;
*VU20111 Legal Process is offered each semester but must be undertaken in your first semester of study as it is a prerequisite unit. You may enter the blocks at any time, but as stated above must undertake Legal Process in the first block and Practice in a legal environment in your last block.

Where and how can I study?

The course is currently being offered via online delivery. Some attendance at Essendon campus in the evenings may be required.

How will I be assessed?

You will need to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. You may be assessed by a combination of written assignments or tests, oral tests and practical assessments, or during a work placement. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. If needed, you will have the chance for reassessment and appeal.

What will I study?

Students will study 16 legal units and 8 administration units. Studenst with previous administartion experience may be eligible for recognition of prior learning (RPL). Your studies will include a work placement and an OHS unit.
