What costs and other fees should I expect?
For AMEP eligible students the cost is funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) up to 510 hours or completion of CSWE 3.
For LLNP referred students, the cost is funded by Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
For Profile funded (fee paying) students with a concession card, the course costs $108.00.
For Profile funded (fee paying) students without a concession card, the cost is $1.50 per study hour.
What employment opportunities will I have?
This course aims to prepare students of a non-English speaking background with the English language skills needed to continue to other ESL courses at a higher level.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain skills in English language including listening, speaking, reading and writing. The courses also include topics related to Australian culture. The certificates are offered at four levels:
Certificate I - Beginner;
Certificate II - Post-Beginner;
Certificate III - Intermediate; and
Certificate IV - Advanced.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate I in Spoken and Written English. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.
If you do not complete the whole certificate, you may apply for a Statement of Attainment for the modules you have successfully completed.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
Students successfully completing a certificate may continue to other English language courses at a higher level. Certificate IV prepares students for entry to vocational education and training in TAFE institutes or for entry to tertiary institutions.
Can I apply?
There are no set prerequisites for this course. The course is suitable for adults of non-English speaking background wanting to improve their English language skills in order to access further education and training. Call the Contact Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233) for more information.
However, entry to courses may be determined by visa category. Contact centre staff may transfer you through to the Language Studies Department to check eligibility.

Please call the Contact Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or contact the Language Studies Department for an appointment on (03) 9279 2446. A mid-year intake is available for this course. All applicants will need to attend an interview to determine current language and literacy levels and to ensure placement in a suitable class.

Where and how can I study?
This course is available at the Broadmeadows campus on a full-time basis, during the day .
However, entry to some courses may be determined by visa category and therefore please refer all enquiries to Language Studies Department on (03) 9279 2446, where staff are trained to check eligibility.
How will I be assessed?
You are required to be assessed in this program, to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge set out in the competency standards/modules.
Assessment may include a combination of written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be informed in advance about the type of assessment and the procedure for the assessment. There will also be opportunity for reassessment and appeal, and you will be provided with this information.
