Course overview
This course is designed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People; however this does not exclude non-Indigenous people. This course is ideal for beginner artists and prepares you for a variety of arts-related careers.

What employment opportunities will I have?
This course provides a pathway to the Certificate II in ATSI Cultural Arts.
Certificate I graduates may find employment opportunities as self-employed artist/crafts person, becoming a member of a co-operative producing art/craft works for sale or an assistant in an established cultural art/ceramics environment. This course may help you contribute towards the cultural development of your community. This course also may lead to a career in the selling and distribution of artworks through galleries.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain artistic skills to reflect an awareness of identity and pride in your culture, visual arts training and skills for participating in community activities.
What qualifications will I receive?
Upon successful completion of all the modules in the course, you will be awarded the Certificate II in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
The Indigenous Education Centre offers a Certificate II in ATSI Cultural Arts which includes specialised units to enhance your studies and skills in different art forms. There is an opportunity once a year, to exhibit your own work at the IEC's Art Exhibition which happens at the end of every year.
Can I apply?
There are no set prerequisites for this course. However it is recommended that you have satisfactory numeracy and literacy skills to undertake this course or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course.
How do I apply?
Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander People are encouraged to apply.
How will I be selected for this course?
There are no prerequisites. All applicants need to attend an interview and undergo an induction into the course. The course can be tailored to suit your level of artistic knowledge and ability.
How long is the course?
This course is one year full time. Monday and Tuesday, 9-3 (ceramics) and Wednesday to Friday, 9-3 (Cultural Arts).
This course has a mid-year entry.

The course is offered full-time at the Indigenous Education Centre, Building W, Broadmeadows campus.

How will I be assessed?
You will need to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. You may be assessed by a combination of written assignments or tests, oral tests and practical assessments in class, or during a work placement. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. If needed, you will have the chance for reassessment and appeal.

The course is run at the Indigenous Education Centre where participants are welcomed in a comfortable and positive learning environment in which the indigenous culture is respected and celebrated.
