Auslan is the recognised language of deaf people in Australia. This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to effectively communicate in Auslan, the language used by members of the Deaf community in Australia.

What costs and other fees should I expect?
Call the Contact Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or email enquiries@kangan.edu.au for a fee schedule. There will be extra costs for additional support materials, e.g. Class handouts, Auslan Practice DVDs or CD-ROMs.
What employment opportunities will I have?
This course may lead to employment in a range of occupations such as teachers aide, integration aide, residential worker, employment consultant, etc.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain skills in Auslan and sufficient knowledge of Deaf culture to communicate with most Deaf people in Australia in social, recreational and basic professional situations.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate II in Auslan. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
This course will lead to higher level studies at Certificate III, IV and Diploma levels. Credits for all successfully completed Certificate II modules are awarded toward the Diploma of Auslan. You can also study the course in Notetaking for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.
Can I apply?
There are no set prerequisites for this course. Applications will be accepted at any time throughout the year. Enrolments can be processed up to four weeks after the commencement of each semester, i.e. by end of February (Semester 1) or mid August (Semester 2), depending on class quotas.
How do I apply?
To apply for this course you must fill in a direct application form which can be obtained from the institute by calling the Contact Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or email enquiries@kangan.edu.au. From there you can be transferred to the Auslan and Deaf Studies Centre. This course also has a mid-year intake.
How will I be selected for this course?
All applicants will need to attend an enrolment session to assess existing Auslan skill level if required and to complete paperwork, process course fees and organise student ID cards.
How long is the course?
This is a three year part-time course with enrolments occurring in February and July each year.
Where and how can I study?
Most classes are conducted in the evening though some day classes may be offered. Classes run from Monday to Thursday at the Richmond campus.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with this information.
