Course overview

This course is designed for people wanting to enter the building and construction
industry to become apprentice carpenters. It will provide the knowledge
and practical skills associated with working in the building construction industry and equip students with the ability to work safely in the industry.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

For a fee schedule, call us on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or (03) 9279 2222. Alternatively email enquiries@kangan.edu.au. There will be extra costs for books and materials of approximately $130. Students are requested to supply their own basic tools and equipment, which cost approximately $190. Students need overalls, safety footwear, eye and ear protection, general stationery, reference books and drafting equipment..

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may lead on to an apprenticeship in carpentry and when qualified,
further employment opportunities as a registered building practitioner, building
inspector, leading hand, sub-foreman, foreman and project manager.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills in the carpentry field of building and construction such as the safe use of hand and portable power tools, setting out, levelling, sub floor framing, wall and roof framing, scaffolding, hanging doors, claddings, linings and fixing. You will also develop knowledge of industry communication skills, material calculations, reading plans and Occupational Health and Safety issues.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate II in Building and Construction (pre-apprenticeship). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

On successful completion of the course you will be eligible to enter into a training agreement with an employer for an apprenticeship - Certificate III in General Construction (Carpentry - Framework/Formwork/Finishing).

You can then complete the balance of your trade schooling in 12 one-week blocks (approximately 480 hours). You may also continue to the Certificate IV in Building or Certificate IV in Building Drafting.

Can I apply?

You can apply if you have completed Year 10 (preferably completed Year 11), or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course, or are currently working in the industry and looking for qualifications.

How will I be selected for this course?

You will need to attend an interview and complete a literacy and numeracy test and demonstrate a keen motivation to complete the course.

How long is the course?

This is a full-time course of 16-20 weeks duration and 642 nominal hours.

Where and how can I study?

This course is offered at the Broadmeadows campus.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods and may take place in your workplace. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and the how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information.

This course has a mid-year entry.

Applications for semester 2, 2011 are now closed. Taking applications for semester 1, 2012 from September 2011.

What will I study?

You will study: calculations; communications; quality principles; basic first aid; building and construction industry induction; workplace documents and plans; career studies; workplace safety and environmental procedures; building structures; levelling; safe handling of plant and power tools; introduction to scaffolding; carpentry hand tools; carpentry power tools; excavation and installing supports less than 1.5 metres depth; floor and wall framing; roof framing; installation of windows and door frames; interior fixing; basic setting out, formwork for concreting; external cladding; introduction to explosive power tools; and introduction to Occupational Health and Safety aspects of demolition.
