Course overview

This course is only available to traineeship participants, in the work place, and through School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT’s) at participating secondary schools.

Training may be conducted on site at the participating school or workplace and/or on campus at Broadmeadows, both in the classroom and in our specially developed outdoor training area, by our dynamic teaching department. We offer students an individual and flexible approach to learning in a caring and supportive environment.

Certificate II is regarded as an entry level course.
Graduates will gain the skills and knowledge to become a valued and productive employee within the Horticulture Industry.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

What employment opportunities will I have?

On successful completion of this course you will be able to seek employment in any of the various sectors of the parks and gardens industry. Employment opportunities include working for small scale domestic contractors, large scale commercial contractors, government and semi-government bodies, sporting clubs of even self-employment. Graduates frequently progress to an apprenticeship (Certificate III in Horticulture - Parks and Gardens).

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain the skills to maintain landscaped garden areas, operate irrigation systems, operate equipment and machinery, renovate turf and recognise and care for plants, you will also gain knowledge of OHS issues, communication skills, environmental work practices and employability skills/industry awareness.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the certificate II in Horticulture (Parks and Gardens). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework, this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Graduates frequently find employment in the industry as an apprentice and return to us to undertake their trade level training in Certificate III in Horticulture (Parks and Gardens).

Kangan Institute offers students who graduate from this course a pathway through a range of certificate level courses and on to a Diploma in Ornamental Horticulture.

Can I apply?

As this is an introductory level course anyone with an interest in horticulture or gardening can apply. This includes young people, mature age persons, people with a previous employment history and those already employed in the industry.
This course also has a mid-year entry around June/July each year.

How will I be selected for this course?

You will be referred to us by the traineeship coordinator at your school or workplace.

How long is the course?

Up to 18 months may be required to complete a traineeship but you may be able to complete sooner through the competency based completion program.

Where and how can I study?

Training may be conducted in the workplace or a participating school environment in the case of a SBAT. And/or on campus at Broadmeadows, both in the classroom and in our specially developed outdoor training area, by our dynamic teaching department. We offer students an individual and flexible approach to learning in a caring and supportive environment.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written and/or oral and/or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. Information regarding the opportunity for reassessment and appeal will be provided to you at the beginning of the course.

Additional comments

The Horticulture Department is a small yet dynamic department offering students an individual and flexible approach to learning in a caring and supportive environment.

Kangan Institute Horticulture students have been awarded the Don Fleming Student Design Award held at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in 2002 and 2005.

In 2002 a Horticulture student was awarded the State and National Vocational Student of the Year award.

What will I study?

The units of competencies to be studied will be discussed and finalised during the enrolment interview process. The units can vary depending on the type of work undertaken in the workplace.
