Course overview

This course is conducted on campus at Broadmeadows and is offered to both full-time and part-time applicants. Learning will take place in a classroom environment as well as in our specially developed outdoor training area, by our dynamic teaching department. We offer students an individual and flexible approach to learning in a caring and supportive environment.

This course is also available to traineeship participants, in the work place, and through School Based New Apprenticeships (SBNA’s) at participating secondary schools.

Certificate II is regarded as an entry level course. Graduates will have skills and knowledge to become a valued and productive employee within the Horticulture Industry.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

What employment opportunities will I have?

On successful completion of this course you will be able to seek employment in any of the various sectors of the horticulture industry. Employment opportunities include working for small scale domestic contractors, large scale commercial contractors, government and semi-government bodies, sporting clubs or even self employment. Graduates frequently progress to an apprenticeship (Certificate III in Horticulture).

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain the skills and knowledge to identify, propagate and maintain a selection of ornamental plants, native plants, turf and vegetables. You will also gain knowledge of OHS issues, communication skills, environmental work practices and an awareness of the industry as a whole.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate II in Horticulture. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Kangan Institue offers students who graduate from this course a pathway through a range of Certificate Level Courses and on to a Diploma in Ornamental Horticulture, for those with the will to learn and the ability to achieve. Our Certificate II graduates frequently find employment in the industry as an apprentice and return to us to complete a trade level Certificate III in Horticulture.

Can I apply?

As this is an introductory level course anyone with an interest in horticulture or gardening can apply. This includes young people, mature age persons, people with a previous employment history and those already employed in the industry.
This course also has a mid-year entry.

How do I apply?

This course also has a mid-year intake around June/July each year.

How will I be selected for this course?

All applicants will attend an informal interview and information session prior to enrolment. Applicants will also be required to complete a Language Literacy and Numeracy assessment This assessment will help us to help you get the best out of your training experience at Kangan Institute. It will enable us to direct our training to best suit you your learning styles.

How long is the course?

This course is full-time or part-time. Full-time students are on campus for up to 24 hours per week for 20 weeks. There is a practical work placement requirement to be completed for this course. Students may select a minimum of three hours per week to a maximum of 24 hours per week. Training options will be discussed during interviews.

Where and how can I study?

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written and/or oral and/or practical assessment methods. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate.

Under the Competency Based Completion program Apprentice employers are also required to complete assessments on their apprentice, before completions can be placed on the resulting system for each apprentice. Information regarding the opportunity for reassessment and appeal will be provided to you at the beginning of the course.

The Horticulture Department is a small yet dynamic department offering students an individual and flexible approach to learning in a caring and supportive environment.

Kangan Institute Horticulture students have won the Don Fleming Student Design Award held at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in 2002 and 2005.

In 2002 a Horticulture student won the State and National Vocational Student of the Year.
