What costs and other fees should I expect?

However a discount will be offered by the department for any on-line resources that needs to be purchased.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may lead to employment as a food and beverage attendant, bar attendant, functions attendant or any area of basic food and beverage service.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills in food and beverage service, cashiering, bar service, responsible service of alcohol (certificate from Liquor Licensing Commission).

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate II in Hospitality. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

This course will lead to higher level studies at AQF 4 level. Credit transfers may be available into Certificate IV in Hospitality.

Can I apply?

There are no set prerequisites for this course. However, it is recommended that you have satisfactory numeracy and literacy skills to undertake this course or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months.)

How will I be selected for this course?

All applicants will need to attend an information session at the Broadmeadows campus. Interviews are conducted regularly, please contact 13 TAFE (13 8233) to find out more about rolling enrolments.

How long is the course?

The course spans 16-18 weeks (six month course)
It will be for 3 days per week; classes run from Monday-Friday between the hours of 8.30am - 5.30pm.

Classes begin on Orientation Day Feb. 8, 2012 at 10am in building D-118 (Richards Restaurant)

Where and how can I study?

You will study at the Broadmeadows campus. Study includes both theory and practical units. There is a compulsory work placement component where a student must obtain, seek and complete work in a food and beverage hospitality environment.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information.

Additional comments

This course has a mid-year entry.

Ours is a small but dynamic department, offering students an individual approach to learning in a caring environment. Classes are a mix of practical activities and the theoretical course content, including industry familiarisations, excursions and on-site guest speakers, together with activities where students assist in the organization and running of events. Students are consistently engaged in hands-on learning and some of the recent activities that have enhanced their learning include:

- The Kangan Food and Wine festival
- The Winberri Music Festival
. - Special functions and lunches
- The Careers Conference
- The Rip-it-up Youth festival
- The Band Slam Competition
- Catering of the Design Students’ Conference at Southbank
- World’s Longest Lunch Melbourne Airport

Students will be required to purchase a food and beverage attendants uniform along with prescribed text.
