Course overview

This course aims to provide the student with broad based knowledge and skills required to be able to work in the music industry in a variety of sectors, including performance/composition, business and technology.

You will gain the skills and knowledge to begin a career in the music industry as a performer, technician or business person.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate II in Music Industry Skills. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

You will be able to continue your studies into the Certificate III in Music.

Applications are now being taken for non-Indigenous students to participate in this program.

How do I apply?

You may apply direct to the Institute. Contact the Gunung Willam Balluk Learning Centre - Indigenous Education Centre at the Broadmeadows campus on (03) 9279 2357, 9279 2287 or 9279 2256.

How will I be selected for this course?

You will be required to attend an interview and audition as part of the selection process. Prospective students will be required to show ability on their chosen instument by playing either an original composition or a cover song. Instruments include - voice, guitar, bass drums etc.

How long is the course?

This is a 12 month full-time course which runs Tuesdays 1 till 4pm, Wednesdays 9 - 12 and 1 - 4.30, and Fridays from 9 - 12.30.

Where and how can I study?

This course is offered at the Broadmeadows campus of Kangan Institute. Students will have access to an auditorium and recording studio. Performances will also be done throughout the year for community festivals etc.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

Contact the Contact Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or 9279 2222 or enquiries@kangan.edu.au for a fee schedule. There may be extra costs for reference books, protective clothing or specialised materials.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment will include written, oral or practical assessment methods and may take place in your workplace. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and the how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information.

What will I study?

You will study a chosen instrument or two in vocals, guitar, bass guitar, drums as well as Music Business, sound engineering, studio recording, history of pop music etc.
