Course overview

This course has an educational outcome for participants who require more extensive training in order to communicate with the deaf at a higher level than offered by the Certificate II in Auslan.

At this level, the course teaches participants how to give routine information in Auslan in a number of contexts, identifying the principle characteristics of Auslan signs and describe generally the cultural and historical trends and issues of the Deaf community.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may lead to employment in a range of occupations such as teachers aide, integration aide, residential worker, employment consultant, etc.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills in Auslan and sufficient knowledge of Deaf culture to communicate with most Deaf people in Australia in social, recreational and basic professional situations.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate III in Auslan. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

This course will lead to higher level studies at Certificate IV and Diploma levels. Credits for all successfully completed Certificate III modules are awarded toward the Diploma of Auslan. You can also study the course in Notetaking for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people.

Can I apply?

You must have successfully completed the Certificate II in Auslan before applying for this course. Equivalent knowledge and skills gained through study or work/life experience can be recognised by sitting a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment.

How do I apply?

To apply for this course you must fill in a direct application form which can be obtained from the institute by calling the Contact Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or email enquiries@kangan.edu.au. From there you can be transferred to the Auslan and Deaf Studies Centre. This course also has a mid-year intake.

How will I be selected for this course?

Applicants must attend an enrolment session to assess existing qualifications and Auslan skill level and to complete paperwork, process course fees and organise student ID cards.

How long is the course?

The course spans 2.5 years when studied on a part-time basis.

Where and how can I study?

Most classes are conducted in the evening. Some day classes may be available as part of the Diploma of Auslan. Evening classes run from Monday to Thursday at the Richmond campus.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with this information.
