Course overview

This course is the nationally recognised qualification for becoming an automotive
electrician. The course covers health and safety, customer relations and using tools, repairing, servicing and testing all the elements of electrical systems.

You will gain skills in all aspects of the automotive electrical trade.

On successful completion you will be awarded the Certificate Ill in Automotive Electrical Technology.

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Credit transfers may be available into related courses such as Certificate IV or Diploma courses.

Can I apply?

You are eligible to apply for this course if you are 15 or older and are employed in the electrical automotive field or have been offered an apprenticeship.

How do I apply?

New Apprentices/Trainees will first need to be employed and signed up to a “Contract of Training” by an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC), with Kangan Institute listed as the preferred provider.

How will I be selected for this course?

Applicants must be currently employed as an apprentice or trainee in the auto electrical field.

How long is the course?

The program is run over three years, with 320 hours of classes a year. But the New Apprenticeship system offers you the flexibility to accelerate your progress, by means such as: gaining credits from another program, attending more classes, taking material home for home study, sourcing materials from the internet or having your skills assessed in your workplace.

Where and how can I study?

For the rest of 2011, this course may be offered at the Richmond campus. As of 2012, all automotive courses will be run from our ACE campus in Docklands. You can do your training by block release (a week or more at a time) or one day a week or at your workplace. Please discuss your options when you enrol.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and the how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with this information.
