Course overview

This course will train you to work in heavy vehicle road transport. You will gain the skills and knowledge to competently carry out service , repair and diagnostic procedures.

What employment opportunities will I have?

With a Certificate III, plus appropriate workplace training, you may obtain work as a registered tradesperson in the retail, service and repair sector of the automotive industry, with heavy vehicle road transport.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

Certificate III programs are the same as apprenticeships. People who successfully complete the certificate III will be recognised as registered tradespeople in heavy vehicle mechanics.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion you will be awarded the Certificate lll in Automotive (Mechanical - Heavy Vehicle Road Transport). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

This course leads to advanced study in the automotive field at certificate lV or diploma level automotive courses.

Can I apply?

You are eligible to apply if you are 15 years or older and have been offered an apprenticeship in this field.

Entry to this course is via rolling enrolments.

How do I apply?

New Apprentices/Trainees will first need to be employed and signed up to a “Contract of training” by an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC).These AAC’s are located in Metropolitan and regional centres.

How will I be selected for this course?

Applicants must be currently employed as an apprentice/trainee in this field of specialisation.

How long is the course?

The program is run over three years, with 320 hours of classes a year. But the New Apprenticeship system offers you the flexibility to accelerate your progress, by: gaining credits from another program, attending more classes, taking material home for home study, sourcing materials from the internet, having your skills assessed in your workplace.

Where and how can I study?

For the rest of 2011, this course may be offered at the Coburg campus. As of 2012, all automotive courses will be run from our ACE campus in Docklands. You can do your training by block ( 2 weeks every six weeks) or day release or at your workplace.

How will I be assessed?

You are required to be assessed in this program, to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge set out in the competency standards/modules.

Assessment may include a combination of written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be informed in advance about the assessment procedure and criteria. There will also be opportunity for appeal and reassessment and you will be provided with this information.

Additional comments

The course consists of seventeen compulsory competencies and a further nineteen competencies chosen by the employer to suit the workplace.
