This apprenticeship course aims to provide comprehensive knowledge and skills in automotive trimming/Upholstery. This course is offered to apprentices or school-based apprentices. It can be done through Fee for service, however, they would not be eligible for Trade Papers as they require the workplace component of an apprenticeship to qualify.

This course may lead to work with an employer in the Automotive trimming/Automotive Upholstery Industry, or eventually running your own business.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
The skills you will gain in the Automotive trimming/Upholstery course will be using industrial sewing machines, a variety of specialist hand tools, cutting and sewing methods to enable you to fulfill the requirements of Patterning out and covering all trim components in a motor vehicle, aircraft or leisure vehicles.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the full Certificate III in Automotive Vehicle Body (Vehicle Trimming Stream) As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
This course will lead to higher level studies into Fabrication and design.
Can I apply?
You are eligible to apply if you are aged 15 years or over and have an employer or have been offered an apprenticeship in the specific area of specialisation.
How do I apply?
New Apprentices will first need to be employed and signed up to a Contract of training by an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC).These AACs are located in Metropolitan and regional centres. As soon as an apprentice is signed up, the RTO will recieve the contract approximately 3 weeks later and employer will be contacted and student placed into TAFE.
How will I be selected for this course?
Applicants must be currently employed as an apprentice in the Automotive Trimming/Upholestry field.
How long is the course?
The course spans is four years with the flexibility of completing early with the fast track apprenticeship system. Learn by your own comfortable pace.
Where and how can I study?
The course is delivered at the ACE Docklands campus. Training can be done in blocks or at your workplace.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information.
Additional comments
A vehicle trimmer (Automotive Upholsterer) installs, repairs and renews the interior trim components of a vehicle such as seat cushions, squabs and head linings. He/she also prepares and attaches door trims, quarter trims and floor coverings. Other tasks for this trade include making and fitting convertable hoods, side curtains, and exterior covers.
What will I study?
The subjects you will study include: workplace relationships and processes, customer service; using and preparing a wide range of trim materials such as vinyls, carpets, canvas and leather products. Using heavy industrial sewing machines such as Plain Sewers, Over lockers and vinyl welding machines etc.
