This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to perform a range of skills associated with the manufacture and installation of free-standing and fitted furniture.
Furniture making stream or kitchen and bathroom stream:
Job roles/employment outcomes The Certificate III in Cabinet Making describes the trade level outcomes for those working in furniture making and those involved in the manufacture and installation of fitted furniture typically in a kitchen, bathroom and related context. Installation skills may be applied to new or renovation work.
All cabinet maker outcomes require customer communication skills in order to ensure customer requirements are met.

This course will help you to gain employment as a qualified tradesperson across the broad spectrum of the furnishing industry.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain comprehensive skills and training in the theoretical and practical elements of Furniture Making or Kitchen & Bathrooms.
What qualifications will I receive?
When you successfully complete the course you will be awarded the Certificate III in Furniture Making. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework, this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion of your apprenticeship, you are eligible to receive a Certificate of Completion, issued by the Victorian Qualifications Authority.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
You may continue on to complete the Diploma of Furnishing (Furniture Technology), Diploma of Arts (Furniture Design) and Certificate IV in Furnishing (Furniture Production) which are all available at other Registered Training Organisations (RTO's). These courses are supported by Furnishing Training Victoria and the furnishing industry.
Can I apply?
There are no set prerequisites for this course. However it is recommended that you have satisfactory numeracy and literacy skills to undertake this course or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course.
How do I apply?
Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC), with Kangan Institute listed as the preferred provider. New apprentices/trainees will first need to be employed and signed up to a contract of training by a locations visit http://www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au/. How will I be selected for this course?
Applicants must be currently employed as a cabinet making apprentice. You will complete a pre-enrolment comprehension, literacy and numeracy test.
How long is the course?
Apprentices attend classes one day per week, 40 weeks per year for three years. Depending on the training plan, a total of around 1000 hours are needed to complete the qualifications.
Where and how can I study?
This course is offered one day per week at the Broadmeadows campus.
How will I be assessed?
You will need to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. You may be assessed by a combination of written assignments or tests, oral tests and practical assessments in class, or at work. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. If needed, you will have the chance for reassessment and appeal.

You will study depending on the stream chosen, either furniture stream or kitchen & bathroom stream. Identify processes in kitchen and bathroom projects; Fabricate cabinets for the built-in environment; Determine requirements for installation of cabinets; Prepare for cabinet installation; Check and measure fit of cabinets; Deliver and monitor a service to customers; Install fitted cabinets and components; Conduct on-site adjustments to cabinets and components; safe work policies & workplace communications; measurements & calculations; work effectively with others; use furniture making sector hand &; power tools; assemble furnishing components; select & apply hardware; apply manufactured board conversion techniques; produce angled &; curved furniture using manufactured board; fabricate custom furniture; prepare &; apply decorative surfaces for furniture; select timbers for furniture production; produce manual & computer-aided production drawings; prepare cutting list from plans & job specifications; measure & draw site layout for manufactured furniture products; set up, operate & maintain sawing machines; set up, operate & maintain drilling machines; set up, operate & maintain edge banding machine; set up, operate & maintain CNC machining &; processing centres; construct jigs & fixtures; read & interpret work documents; estimate & cost job; and handle dangerous goods/hazardous substances.
