Course overview

The Certificate III in Children's Services prepares you to use organisational policies, procedures and individual children’s profiles to plan activities and provide education and care for children. You will learn to facilitate their play and leisure to help them to achieve their developmental outcomes. Workers may work under direct supervision or autonomously and in some settings have limited supervision of volunteers.

What employment opportunities will I have?

The new Children's Services Regulations have set the Certificate III as the minimum qualification for all workers in Children's Service settings. Certificate III graduates can work under the direction of more qualified or experienced staff in centre-based day care services, kindergartens and out-of-school hours services.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain the skills necessary to work under supervision with infants and children up to 12 years of age.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate III in Children's Services. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Graduates of this course are eligible to study the Diploma of Children’s Services (Early Childhood Education and Care).

Can I apply?

You will need to have passed Year 11 or equivalent or be mature age and demonstrate satisfactory written and spoken communication skills.
Applicants must be 17 years of age on February 1, 2012 as Children's Services staff need to be a minimum of 18 years of age in order to gain employment.

Applicants without current child care experience are encouraged to do one day’s voluntary work experience in a child care centre prior to an interview.

How long is the course?

The course involves approximately 550 hours and is delivered over approximately six months full-time or 12 months part-time.

Where and how can I study?

There are three delivery modes for this qualification:

*four days per week from 9am-4pm.
*four days per week for ESL applicants 9.30am-3pm - inclusive of language support.
*two nights per week (Mon/Thurs) 6pm-9.15pm.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is a necessary part of this program to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge set out in the competency standards. You may be assessed by demonstration, written work, projects, case studies, log books, on-the-job and off-the-job tasks, supervisor reports or a combination of these methods. You will be informed in advance about the assessment procedure and criteria.
