Course overview

This course is designed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. This is a practical, skills-based course that will teach you how to operate machinery like brush-cutters and small building tools, build paths, implement erosion control, recognise many Indigenous plants and animals and control plant pests and introduced animals.

The course teaches you how to recognise, record and manage natural areas, and sites special to Kooris. Cultural and personal empowerment through job-seeking skills and mentoring from community leaders is another important feature of the course.

What employment opportunities will I have?

The course may lead to work in the land management industry, project fire fighting, landscaping, parks and gardens.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain hands-on skills that can help you gain employment in gardening, landscaping, local council bush-crew and parks and gardens.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate III in Conservation and Land Management. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Participants who have completed the Certificate III in Conservation and Land Management may wish to continue their studies with the Certificate IV in Conservation and Land Management.

How will I be selected for this course?

All applicants need to attend an interview. You may have to complete a pre-selection form and be prepared to do a written test. An aptitude and interest in aspects of land management are desirable.

How long is the course?

This is a 6 month course available in second semester.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods and may take place in your workplace. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information.

Additional comments

The course is run at the Indigenous Education Centre where Indigenous people are welcomed in a comfortable and positive learning environment in which the Aboriginal culture is respected and celebrated.

This course has a mid-year entry.

What will I study?

You will study a wide variety of practical subjects aimed at gaining competency in areas vital to employment in the land management industry such as recognising plants and animals; natural area restoration; treatments for the control of destructive weed pests; fencing; and, correct methods for planting trees and shrubs etc. The course features subjects of particular interest to indigenous students, such as interpretation of 'country', and the management and protection of cultural sites. All subjects are designed to suit the needs and interests of Indigenous people.
