This apprenticeship course provides competencies to select, install, set up, test, fault find, repair and maintain electrical systems and equipment in building and premises. It includes ERAC requirements for an 'Electrician's License.'

What employment opportunities will I have?

On completion of this course, you will be able to seek employment in all facets of the electrical industry upon gaining an Electrical Licence.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

This course is designed to enable electrical apprentices to complete the four year electrical apprenticeship. It provides the off-the-job underpinning skills and knowledge to support the on-the-job practical training. The components of this course provide apprentices with the necessary competencies to install, test and connect wiring and equipment in domestic, commercial and industrial situations, as well as maintaining electrical equipment in a safe working condition.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate III in Electrotechnology (Electrician). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. You may then make an application for an Electricians Licence from Energy Safe Victoria.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Students may continue to their training by completing competencies in the Certificate IV in Electrical.

Can I apply?

You can only apply if you have an employer and have signed a contract of Training in the Qualification Certificate III in Electrotechnology (Electrician).

How do I apply?

New Apprentices/Trainees will first need to be employed and signed up to a “Contract of training” by an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC), with Kangan Institute listed as the preferred provider . How will I be selected for this course?

You must have an employer before commencing this course. It is also strongly recommended that students entering an electrical apprenticeship have a minimum standard of Year 11 literacy and numeracy skills.

How long is the course?

This is a three year apprenticeship course with the nominal hours of 1,060 hours.

Where and how can I study?

The course is offered as day release at the Broadmeadows campus.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in each Competency Unit to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the unit. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods and supervisor/employer reports. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and the how it will operate. What will I study?

Strict rules apply within the Electrotechnology Training Package for the selection of the Units of Competence that make up the Systems Electrician qualification. Knowledge and skills modules are used to assist the learner gain competence.
