What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may lead you to work in occupations such as fitter / machinist, maintenance fitter or toolmaker. As a tradesperson you would generally be involved in the installation and overhaul of mechanical plant and associated equipment.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will be a qualified tradesperson with skills that are recognised by the industry. From there your career can take off in any number of directions. Many employers pay their tradespeople well above the award rate for their skills.

What qualifications will I receive?

When you successfully complete this course you will be awarded the Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade AQF 3. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

You may continue on to further specialist studies or higher level studies, such as Certificate IV.

Can I apply?

To start an apprenticeship, you need to find a job as an apprentice and sign a training contract with your employer. (Year 11 or Year 12 is usually an advantage). You may receive credit for previous studies including Certificates in Engineering.

How do I apply?

Apprentices should contact the Call Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or 9279 2222 to enrol. Apprentices are forwarded an Apprentice Placement Form when their employer registers them with the Victorian Qualifications Authority and should present this form on enrolment.

How will I be selected for this course?

Applicants must be currently employed as an apprentice in the field of training.

How long is the course?

Usually, up to three to four years, combining on-the-job and off-the-job training.

Where and how can I study?

The course is available at the Broadmeadows campus. You will undertake the equivalent of one day training per week at Broadmeadows as part of your job. The fourth year is usually spent entirely on the job.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

Contact the Call Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or 9279 2222 for a fee schedule. There may be extra costs for reference books, protective clothing or specialised materials.

How will I be assessed?

You will need to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. You may be assessed by a combination of written assignments or tests, oral tests and practical assessments in class, or at work. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and the how it will operate. If needed, you will have the chance for reassessment and appeal.

What will I study?

An apprenticeship is a work-based training program involving completion of competency units amounting to 96 points.

There are a number of standard core competencies to be completed but most competencies are chosen to suit the type of employment.

The available competencies are listed in the "Industry Handbook for the Metal & Engineering Training Package".
