Course overview

This course is designed for people seeking a career in the hospitality or tourism industry, in particular, in the Event Management field. The course concentrates on the skills required in the organization of events and gives students many practical opportunities to run both on-campus and off-campus events.

Part of the hands on activity will be working in the Virtual enterprise office where students will run a practice office two days a week, working in an online virtual environment.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may lead to employment in a range of organizations where event management takes place and such organizations are diverse in nature. Examples include professional conference organisers, exhibition and event management companies, sporting associations, community organisations, hospitality and cultural venues.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills in an administrative or operational events support role. Specific skills will be attained like the event management computerised registration package Summit, organizing in-house functions, arranging meetings, staging for events etc.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the SIT30607 CERTIFICATE III in EVENTS. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

This course will lead to higher level studies and will be articulated into firstly the Diploma and then the Advanced Diploma of Events which will be completed after 18 months of study in total, including the Cert III.

Can I apply?

There are no set prerequisites for this course. However it is recommended that you have satisfactory numeracy and literacy skills to undertake this course. You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed VCE or an approved equivalent course and the satisfactory completion of the work requirements (eligibility to transfer); or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months.)

How long is the course?

The course spans two terms of one year and will be completed by mid year at which point students who elect to continue studying will commence the Diploma and if they wish the Advanced Diploma units in the following year.

Where and how can I study?

You will study full-time at the Broadmeadows campus.
Classes are generally set between the hours of 8.30am -5.30pm (4 days per week).

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with this information.

Additional comments

Ours is a small but dynamic department, offering students an individual approach to learning in a caring environment. Classes are a mix of practical activities and the theoretical course content, including industry familiarisations, excursions and on-site guest speakers, together with activities where students assist in the organization and running of events. In the second year students will design their own event company or event. Students are consistently engaged in hands-on learning and some of the recent meetings and event activities that have enhanced their learning include:

- The Rip-it-up Youth festival
- The Band Slam Competition
- Catering and registration of the Design Students’ Conference at Southbank
