This full-time government-funded day course will help you start your career in the fitness industry. It's designed for entry level students looking to study full-time and develop their fitness instruction skills in a supported environment.
This course is the standard industry qualification required to work as a fitness instructor.

What costs and other fees should I expect?
Contact us on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or (03) 9279 2222 or email enquiries@kangan.edu.au for a fee schedule. The materials fees for 2012 is $150. This includes texts, a Kangan Institute Polo and any other associated printing. There may be extra costs for reference books, protective clothing or specialised materials.
What employment opportunities will I have?
This course will give you skills to work under supervision as a Fitness Instructor. This Certificate is your Industry Fitness Training Qualification.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain skills in fitness instruction, exercise programming and the planning and delivering of exercise based fitness and activity sessions.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate III in Fitness (SIS30310). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.
- You will also receive your Level II First Aid Certificate.
- Opportunities also exist to complete your Level 1 Sports Trainer Certificate and Australian Sports Commission After Schools Activity Leaders Certificate.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
The full-time day course also completes the Certificate IV in Fitness (Personal Training). Graduates may like to complete further studies in Certificate IV in Sport (Development) offered by the department.
Graduates may also be well placed to apply for higher education qualifications in the physical education, human movement, exercise science and exercise rehabilitation areas.
Can I apply?
There are no pre-requisites for this course. You can apply if you have a desire to pursue a career in the health and fitness industry, or have worked within the industry in any capacity. You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed VCE, VCAL or an approved equivalent course or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months).

How will I be selected for this course?
Personal qualifications, work experience and sporting experience will be taken into account as well as previous academic results.
Mature age students are also selected based on previous academic results.
Applicants who submit the Pre-Selection Profile Form will be given first consideration for a place.
How long is the course?
The Certificate III in Fitness full-time day course is run in conjunction with the Certificate IV in Fitness (Personal Training) and takes 20 weeks of study to complete. Current students study Monday-Thursday 9am-3.30pm. Please note that these days and times are subject to change.
Where and how can I study?
This course is held at our Richmond campus. The course is a mixed delivery model with extensive theory and practical based studies. Practical based learning may be held in the gym on campus or at local recreational facilities. Some competencies may be delivered with other course groups. Some modules may be flexibly delivered.
Classes are designed to be interactive and challenging. Where possible, students are given real life projects to work with and the teaching staff endeavours to make all classes practical and innovative. Teaching staff bring real life experience to the course to assist students in understanding the fitness industry and the demands and responsibilities of a fitness instructor.
All teaching staff have current industry experience and are experts in their fields.
How will I be assessed?
A mixture of practical tutorials, project work and written tests will be used in assessing this course. Assessment is a necessary part of this program to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge set out in the competency standards. You will be informed in advance about the assessment procedure and criteria. There will also be opportunity for appeal and reassessment and you will be provided with this information.
What will I study?
Students study in the areas of anatomy, physiology, exercise science, fitness instruction, fitness assessment, nutrition, clients and communication, sport law, occupational health and safety and activity leadership.
