What costs and other fees should I expect?

What employment opportunities will I have?

Career prospects have been enhanced by industry restructuring with support from employers, union and the Industry Training Board, Furnishing Training Victoria.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain comprehensive training in the theoretical, communication, and practical elements of furniture polishing so that you can participate actively via employment across the broad spectrum of the furnishing industry.

What qualifications will I receive?

when you successfully complete this course you will be awarded the Certificate III in Furniture Finishing. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework, this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion of your apprenticeship, you are eligible to receive a Certificate of Completion, issued by the Victorian Qualifications Authority.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

You may continue on to complete the Diploma of Furnishing (Furniture Technology), Diploma of Arts (Furniture Design), or the Certificate IV in Furnishing (Furniture Production) which are all available at other Registered Training Organisations (RTO's). These courses are supported by Furnishing Training Victoria and the furnishing industry.

Can I apply?

There are no set pre-requisites for this course, however Year 11 or Year 12 is usually an advantage. You can apply if you have an employer prepared to offer you an apprenticeship (Contract of Training in this trade). The Institute has a policy of equal opportunity and welcomes both male and female students. Women are continually entering the furnishing industry and find the work both suitable and challenging.

New Apprentices/Trainees will first need to be employed and signed up to a “Contract of training” by an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC), with Kangan Institute listed as the preferred provider . How will I be selected for this course?

You will have to complete a pre-enrolment comprehension, literacy and numeracy test.

Applicants must be currently employed as a furniture finishing apprentice.

How long is the course?

Apprentices attend the institute one day per week, 40 weeks per year for three years. A total of 807 hours of training is demanded by the course syllabus.

Where and how can I study?

This course is delivered at the Broadmeadows campus.

How will I be assessed?

You will need to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. You may be assessed by a combination of written assignments or tests, oral tests and practical assessments in class, or at work. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. If needed, you will have the chance for reassessment and appeal.

You will study: safe work policies and practices; workplace communication; work effectively with others; use furniture finishing sector hand and power tools; dismantle/reassemble furniture; remove surface coatings; prepare surfaces for finishing; maintain spray equipment ; booth; apply surface coatings by spray gun; apply stains, fillers ; bleach; apply surface coatings by hand; make up colours; apply plural component coatings; apply soft rubber techniques; enhance finishes; repair and touch up surfaces; apply graining decorative finishes; apply traditional French polishing techniques; read and interpret work documents; estimate and cost job; and handle dangerous goods/hazardous substances.
