What costs and other fees should I expect?
For a fee schedule, call us on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or (03) 9279 2222. Alternatively email enquiries@kangan.edu.au. There will be extra costs for reference books of approximately $150, protective clothing of approximately $120 and specialised materials of approximately $440.
What employment opportunities will I have?
This course will help you to gain employment as a qualified tradesperson across the broad spectrum of the furnishing industry.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain comprehensive skills and training in the theoretical and practical elements of furniture making.
What qualifications will I receive?
when you successfully complete the course you will be awarded the Certificate III in Furniture Making. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework, this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion of your apprenticeship, you are eligible to receive a Certificate of Completion, issued by the Victorian Qualifications Authority.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
You may continue on to complete the Diploma of Furnishing (Furniture Technology), Diploma of Arts (Furniture Design) and Certificate IV in Furnishing (Furniture Production) which are all available at other Registered Training Organisations (RTO's). These courses are supported by Furnishing Training Victoria and the furnishing industry.
Can I apply?
There are no set pre-requisites for this course, however Year 11 or Year 12 is usually an advantage.
You can apply if you have an employer prepared to offer you an apprenticeship (Contract of Training in this trade). The Institute has a policy of equal opportunity and welcomes both male and female students. Women are continually entering the furniture industry and find the work both suitable and challenging.

New Apprentices/Trainees will first need to be employed and signed up to a “Contract of training” by an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC), with Kangan Institute listed as the preferred provider . How will I be selected for this course?
Applicants must be currently employed as a furniture making apprentice. You will complete a pre-enrolment comprehension, literacy and numeracy test.
How long is the course?
Apprentices attend classes one day per week, 40 weeks per year for three years. Depending on the training plan, a total of 947 hours or 959 hours are needed to complete the qualifications.

This course is offered at the Broadmeadows campus.
How will I be assessed?
You will need to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. You may be assessed by a combination of written assignments or tests, oral tests and practical assessments in class, or at work. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. If needed, you will have the chance for reassessment and appeal.
