Course overview
This course is designed for those employed in the industry as an apprentice.
Applicants for this course must be employed in the industry and have signed a Contract with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) and their employer. These AAC’s are located in both Melbourne Metropolitan and Regional Victorian Centres or see the “Apprenticeships Victoria’ website for more details on how to become and Apprentice or Trainee.
*Apprentices and Trainees should ask for Kangan Institute to be their preferred training provider when they first sign their agreement with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC).

What costs and other fees should I expect?
Apprentices are required to pay their fees prior to the start of training each year. The fees will vary depending on the number and type of units they are enrolled in for that year.

What employment opportunities will I have?
There is a strong demand for tradespeople in the horticulture industry and you will have a wide range of employment opportunities.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain a broad cross section of the relevant skills and knowledge to set up as a general horticulturist, including plant cultivation and selection, plant care and pest control, propagation, protection of the environment. You will also gain an understanding of the occupational health and safety issues relevant to the Horticulture Industry and much more.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate III in Horticulture (Landscape). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
Kangan Institute offers students who graduate from this course a pathway through a range of certificate level courses and on to a Diploma in Ornamental Horticulture.
Can I apply?
As this is an introductory level course anyone with an interest in horticultural landscaping can apply. This includes young people, mature age persons, people with a previous employment history and those already employed in the industry.
How do I apply?
You must select Kangan Institute as your preferred Training organisation, when you sign your initial contract with your employer and an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC), you will then be directed to us automatically and we will contact you after we receive notification from the government of your apprenticeship details.
How will I be selected for this course?
Applicants will be asked to attend an informal interview and information session prior to enrolment.
How long is the course?
This course can be undertaken as an apprenticeship or traineeship and can take up to four years to complete. Because this course is part of the competency based completion program, you may be able to complete sooner depending on your workplace, personal motivation and abilities.
Where and how can I study?
Your training and assessment will take place both onsite (in your workplace) and on-campus at Kangan Institute's Broadmeadows Campus. Your training and assessments may be undertaken in a number of ways, through direct observation by us, assignments, question and answer sheets verbal questioning and third party reports are a few of the possibilities.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods and may take place in your workplace. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with this information.
Additional comments
All students attending Horticulture classes at Kangan Institute's Broadmeadows Campus are required to have a Construction Induction Card (CI Card), if you do not already have one. You will be enrolled in this course at the time of enrolment. Personal protective equipment such as steel capped safety boots are also required to attend on campus training.
What will I study?
The units of competencies to be studied will be discussed and agreed upon at your initial interview between you, a Kangan institute teacher and your employer prior to enrolment. The units to be studied can vary depending on the type of work undertaken by you with your employer.
