This course is designed for those performing production roles applying technical skills within a millinery production environment including design and make of headwear such as fascinators, bridal headpieces, hats and caps.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may lead to employment working as a Milliner in a made-to-measure enterprise of the industry.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills in design, complex millinery construction (Block, shape and Assemble), patternmaking, embellishments, composition of millinery materials, and headwear maintenance, quality and occupational health and safety.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate III in Millinery. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

This course will lead to higher level studies at certificate IV level. Credit transfers may be available into the Certificate IV in Millinery.

Can I apply?

You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed the Certificate II in Millinery; or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months.)

How do I apply?

You must obtain an application form from the institute. Please refer to the applications brochure which will provide details on timing of applications and enrolments.

How will I be selected for this course?

All applicants will need to attend a pre-selection interview. Enquiries to the Centre of Fashion.

How long is the course?

The course spans 1 year part time evening or 6 months part time day of 320 nominal hours.

Where and how can I study?

You will study at the Richmond campus.
Part time evening course runs 1 night per week over 1 year. Full time day course runs 2 days per week over 6 months commencing in July.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. Assessment methods and requirement will be clearly outlined in advance. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information.

Additional comments

This course does have a mid-year entry point, however applicants must have successfully completed the Certificate II in Millinery.

What will I study?

Mandatory units:
Make flat patterns from hat blocks; Make millinery using a pattern derived for a hat block; Identify performance and handling requirements of millinery materials.

Specialist units:
Block and shape complex millinery; Assemble complex blocked millinery components; Trim headwear; Apply millinery sewing and adhesion techniques; Draw and interpret a basic sketch; Work in a team environment; Draw a trade drawing for fashion design and Perform basic maintenance of headwear or millinery.
