Course overview

This course aims to provide the student with broad based knowledge and skills required to be able to work in the music industry in a variety of sectors, including performance/composition, business and technology.

Performance opportunities

All students are given performance opportunities throughout the year on and off campus. All performances are assessed and some of these include:

- NAIDOC week
- Open Days
- Library and Learning Centre
- Winberri Music Festival
- Orientation weeks
- Mid Year and End of Year Showcases

The Studio

Students learn how to record, mix and master original music using the industry standard recording system Pro Tools. With the support our teachers and access to professional microphones, students can record full songs and make a demo of their own music.

Instrumental lessons

All students are given the opportunity to have one to one tuition. Students are expected to practice regularly on their chosen instrument, attend weekly lessons and perform in a variety of ensembles.

Auditorium

Performance units are held weekly in the auditorium. Students have the opportunity to setup, rehearse songs to performance standard pack down instruments.

You will gain the skills and knowledge to begin a career in the music industry as a performer, technician or business person.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate III in Music. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

You will be able to continue your studies into the Certificate IV in Music.

To gain entry into this course, all prospective students must undertake an interview and audition on your chosen instrument.

How will I be selected for this course?

You will be required to attend an interview and audition as part of the selection process. Prospective students will be required to show ability on their chosen instument by playing either an original composition or a cover song. Instruments include - voice, guitar, bass drums etc.

How long is the course?

This is a 12 month full-time course and classes run on Tuesdays 1pm - 4pm, Wednesdays 9am - 12pm and 1pm - 4pm, and Fridays 1pm - 3pm.

Where and how can I study?

This course is offered at the Broadmeadows campus of Kangan Institute. Students will have access to an auditorium and recording studio. Performances will also be done throughout the year for community festivals etc.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods and may take place in your workplace. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and the how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information.

This course has a mid-year entry.

What will I study?

You will study a chosen instrument or two in vocals, guitar, bass guitar, drums as well as music business, sound engineering, studio recording, history of pop music etc.
