Course overview

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to learn day-to-day retail operations focussing on specialist and supervisory roles. Work will be undertaken in various retail settings such as specialty stores, supermarkets, department stores and retail fast food outlets.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may lead to employment in various retail outlets such as specialty stores, supermarkets, department stores and retail fast food outlets. Typical job roles could include a sales assistant, customer service representative, crew leader or team leader, check out supervisor or merchandise coordinator.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills in building and maintaining customer relationships, implementing policies and procedures, creating displays, supervisory and coaching skills, advanced selling and merchandising and leadership.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate III in Retail. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

This course will lead to higher level studies at Certificate IV in Retail Management and Diploma in Visual Merchandising.

Can I apply?

You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed Certificate II in Retail (specific core units) or can demonstrate relevant retail employment experience.

How will I be selected for this course?

All applicants will need to attend a short interview and pass a language, literacy and numeracy test at level 3 of the national reporting system.

How long is the course?

The course is offered as an evening course at the Riichmond campus but the Essendon Campus will be considered depending on the numbers of students. 1 night a week over 6 months and 2 days of work placement per week for a toatal of 22 days.

Where and how can I study?

Classes are held at our Richmond campus where you will have access to a simulated retail store. Essendon campus will be considered if we have the numbers.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will consist of written, oral and practical methods as well as on the job. Assessment methods are explained well in advance. There is also the opportunity for reassessment. Further information will be provided at enrolment.

Additional comments

Held at Richmond campus only although if enough interest Essendon campus may be an option.

This course has mid year entry.

The course consists of 10 units- 3 core and 7 elective units. Please refer to the module listing for unit details. This is made up of 320 hours.
