What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may lead to employment as self-employed artist/crafts person. You may also become a member of a co-operative producing art/craft works for sale or an assistant in an established art/craft studios. This course may help you contribute towards the cultural development of your community. This course also may lead to a career in the selling and distribution of artworks through galleries.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain artistic skills to reflect an awareness of identity and pride in your culture, visual arts training and skills for participating in community activities.

What qualifications will I receive?

When you successfully complete this course, you will be awarded the Certificate IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework, this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Credit transfers may be available into the Diploma of Arts in specific fields (eg. studio textiles, ceramics etc) or in an undergraduate course in fine arts. The Indigenous Education Centre also offers specialised units to enhance your studies and skills in different art forms.

You can apply if you are a member of the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.

How do I apply?

If you wish to apply for this course, you must obtain an application form from the Institute. Call us on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or email enquiries@kangan.edu.au. This course has a mid-year intake.

How will I be selected for this course?

You will need to attend an interview and undergo an induction into the course. Please bring a portfolio of your work. Selection for this course is based on prior experience and training. The course can be tailored to suit your level of artistic knowledge and ability.

How long is the course?

This course is one year full time. Monday to Friday (9 - 3pm)

Where and how can I study?

This course is offered at the Indigenous Education Centre at the Broadmeadows campus. The course is also offered flexibly, so you can study at your own pace.

How will I be assessed?

You will need to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. You may be assessed by a combination of written assignments or tests, oral tests and practical assessments in class, or during a work placement. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and the how it will operate. If needed, you will have the chance for reassessment and appeal.

Additional comments

The course is run at the Indigenous Education Centre where Indigenous people are welcomed in a comfortable and positive learning environment in which the Koori culture is respected and celebrated.

This course has a mid-year entry.

What will I study?

You will study a combination of core and elective modules such as Ceramics, Painting, Drawing, Art and Cultural History, and Screen Printing.

Students have many opportunities within the course to display and promote their artwork in competitions, festivals, and group exhibitions.
