This apprenticeship course is aimed at people wanting to work as an Aviation Maintenance Technician for aircraft mechanical equipment.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course is designed to provide you with skills for employment with international and domestic airlines in aircraft production and refurbishment, and corporate and general aviation.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills in analysis, design, planning, execution and evaluation across a range of technical and management functions including development of new criteria, applications, knowledge or procedures. You will be able to demonstrate a command of wide-ranging, highly specialised technical, creative or conceptual skills.

What qualifications will I receive?

When you successfully complete this course you will be awarded the Certificate IV in Aeroskills (Mechanical). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework, this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

You may be able to continue on to higher level studies, such as a Diploma. On successful completion of this course you may gain credit towards the Diploma of Aeroskills (Mechanical) and other higher qualifications.

Can I apply?

Students must be employed as an apprentice/tradesperson in the designated trade. Employers usually prefer applicants to have satisfactorily completed Year 11 or equivalent, with passes in English, Physics and Mathematics, or have successfully completed a pre-vocational course.

How do I apply?

If you wish to apply for this course as an apprentice, your employer will register your intention to enrol through a registered AAC (Australian Apprenticeships Centre).

How will I be selected for this course?

Applicants MUST be currently employed as an apprentice.

How long is the course?

This is a three year course with set on-the-job and off-the-job competencies to be completed.

Where and how can I study?

This course is studied at the Aerospace Industry Training Centre, Broadmeadows Campus.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

Contact the Call Centre on13 TAFE (13 8233) or 9279 2222 for a fee schedule. There may be extra costs for reference books and protective clothing and/or specialised materials.

How will I be assessed?

You will need to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. You may be assessed by a combination of written assignments or tests, oral tests and practical assessments in class, or during a work placement. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. If needed, you will have the chance for reassessment and appeal.

Applicants must be currently employed as an apprentice.

What will I study?

The course has six common Core units, one mechanical technical stream unit, and students must complete one of the following pathways: Pathway 1 (suited to Aircraft Mechanical Engineer in general aviation), or Pathway 2 (suited to AME in large airline operations), or Pathway 3 (suit Aircraft Mechanic). Additional units may be required to meet enterprise and/or licensing needs for Pathway 1.
