Course overview

This course is designed for those who require advanced training in order to communicate with Deaf people. There are potential employment outcomes. At this level, the course teaches participants how to interact and give a range of complex information in Auslan in a number of contexts, and identify the significant differences between the structures of Auslan and English.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

Call the Contact Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233) for a fee schedule. There will be extra costs for two text books and you will also have to contribute toward the cost of excursions from time to time. Auslan and Deaf Studies Centre staff can provide you with a breakdown of Materials Fees.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may lead to employment in a range of deaf-related vocations including, but not limited to; Teachers Aide, Integration Aide, Employment Consultant, Child or Youth Residential Care Assistant, Youth Worker, Aged Care Worker.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills in Auslan and sufficient knowledge about the Deaf community to enable communication with most Deaf people in Australia in social, recreational and semi-professional situations.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate IV in Auslan As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

This course will lead to higher level studies at Diploma level. Credits for all successfully completed Certificate IV modules are awarded toward the Diploma of Auslan. You can also study the course in Notetaking for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing People.

Can I apply?

The entry requirement for Certificate IV in Auslan is completion of Certificate III or equivalent competency at that level. Students can make an appointment to be assessed for demonstrated equivalence in Auslan skills and can gain credit for entry requirements at any level through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

How do I apply?

To apply for this course you must fill in a direct application form which can be obtained from the institute by calling the Contact Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or email enquiries@kangan.edu.au. From there you can be transferred to the Auslan and Deaf Studies Centre. This course also has a mid-year intake.

How will I be selected for this course?

In order to successfully enter this course, applicants may be required to attend an interview and selection testing session. Students should be able to participate in small informal group discussions and presentations and have an interest in Auslan and the Deaf community.

How long is the course?

The course spans three semesters and is usually conducted as part of the two-year, full-time Diploma of Auslan course.

Where and how can I study?

Classes will be conducted at the Richmond campus. Students attend sessions between 9am to 3pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Students are required to attend several excursions, including one Auslan Only weekend camp each year.

How will I be assessed?

You will need to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. You may be assessed by a combination of practical tutorials, project work, written tests, role-plays, signed presentations in front of class members and video work. You will be informed in advance about the assessment procedure and criteria. There will also be opportunity for appeal and reassessment and you will be provided with this information.

Additional comments

Note: The Certificate IV in Auslan is commonly offered only as part of the Diploma of Auslan. Entry can occur directly if the prerequisites have been satisfied.
