This course is designed to reflect the role of contract bookkeepers or employees performing the role of bookkeeper for organisations and who perform duties such as establishing and maintaining accounting systems, preparing (or assisting in the preparation of) Business Activity Statements, processing payroll, and developing management systems for organisations.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

There will be extra costs for student workbooks of approximately $400. A detailed booklist will be made available when you enrol in this course.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course meets the academic requirements for registration with the Tax Practitioners Board as a BAS service provider, and may provide opportunities for the establishment of a bookkeeping practice or business, or lead to employment as a contract bookkeeper.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills in preparing the financial records (and reports) for a range of business types, and in the use of business computer applications, especially MYOB Accounting software products.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate IV in Bookkeeping. This program is nationally recognised as part of the Australian Qualifications Framework.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

This course will lead to higher level studies in Accounting (via the Diploma of Accounting, and the Advanced Diploma of Accounting). Credit transfers may be available into the Certificate III in Accounts Administration and Certificate IV in Accounting.

Can I apply?

There are no entry requirements for this course. However, it is recommended that you have satisfactory numeracy, literacy, and computing skills to undertake this course and that you have recent and relevant work experience and/or a related study background.

How will I be selected for this course?

All applicants will need to attend an interview and enrolment session, bringing with them evidence of their citizenship (or residency) status and (if under 20 years of age at 1 January, 2012) proof of age in order to enrol in the course.

You may also be required to sit a literacy and numeracy test to determine the level of support required (if any) having enrolled in this course.

How long is the course?

The course would normally be completed in six months, but may be completed in a shorter time depending on the nature and extent of your previous formal studies, work and life experience.

Where and how can I study?

This course will operate from both the Broadmeadows and Essendon campuses and can be undertaken in a traditional, face-to-face learning mode, with some units delivered in our online environment. As an alternative to attending formal classes you may wish to study more flexibly, attending some classes/workshops, or perhaps study entirely from home (in a distance learning mode).

Classes are available during weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays, and students may enrol as either part-time or full-time.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information upon commencement of your classes.

Skills Recognition is available for all units in this qualification. If you require any additional information on Skills Recognition (crediting your previous learning or life experience) please contact the Department Administrator on 9279 2470.

This course has four key intakes throughout the year, but students may choose to enrol in this course at any time.

Students may commence their Accounting studies in the Certificate III in Accounts Administration or enrol at Certificate IV level without any previously completed Accounting or Bookkeeping qualifications as there is no entry requirement for this qualification.

After completing all core units in the Certificate IV in Bookkeeping (or Accounting) students may enrol in the Diploma of Accounting.
