Course overview

This full time, combined fee-for-service and government-funded, day course will help you start your career in the fitness industry. It's designed for entry level students looking to study full-time and develop their fitness instruction skills in a supported environment.

This course is the standard industry qualification required to work as a Personal Trainer.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

Contact us on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or (03) 9279 2222 or email enquiries@kangan.edu.au for a fee schedule. Materials fees associated with this course are $150. This covers texts, a Kangan Institute polo and any other printing and class notes. There may also be extra costs for reference books, protective clothing or specialised materials.

What employment opportunities will I have?

The Certificate IV in Fitness course is designed to give students the opportunity to work as a personal trainer for gymnasiums or to start up their own personal training business and train clients one-on-one.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills and have an understanding in the following areas: business of fitness, advanced resistance training, nutrition and weight management and exercise for health related issues.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate IV in Fitness (SIS40210). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this 6program is nationally recognised.

You will also receive your Level II First Aid Certificate.

Opportunities also exist to complete your Level 1 Sports Trainer Certificate and Australian Sports Commission after Schools Activity Leaders Certificate.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

The full-time day course also incorporates the Certificate III in Fitness. Graduates may like to complete further studies in Certificate IV in Sport (Development) offered by the department.

Graduates may also be well placed to apply for higher education qualifications in the physical education, human movement, exercise science and exercise rehabilitation areas.

Can I apply?

Certificate III in Fitness is a prerequisite for Certificate IV in Fitness; however, Certificate III is run in conjunction with this particular Certificate IV course. You can apply if you have a desire to pursue a career in the health and fitness industry, or have worked within the industry in any capacity.

You can also apply if you have satisfactorily completed VCE, VCAL or an approved equivalent course and have satisfactorily completed the work requirements or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months).

How do I apply?

How will I be selected for this course?

Personal qualifications, work experience and sporting experience will be taken into account as well as previous academic results.

Mature age students are also selected based on previous academic results.

Applicants who submit the Pre-Selection Profile Form will be given first consideration for a place.

How long is the course?

The Certificate IV in Fitness full-time day course is run in conjunction with the Certificate III in Fitness and takes one semester of study to complete. Current students are required for classes Monday-Thursday 9am-3.30pm. Please note, days and times are subject to change.

Where and how can I study?

This course is held at our Richmond campus. The course is a mixed delivery model with extensive theory and practical based studies. Practical based learning is carried out in the gym on campus and local recreational facilities. Core competency delivery may be carried out with Certificate IV in Sport and Recreation / Sport (Development) groups. Some modules may be flexibly delivered.

Classes are designed to be interactive and challenging. Where possible students are given real life projects to work on and the teaching staff endeavours to make all classes practical and innovative. Teaching staff bring real life experience to the course to assist students in understanding the fitness industry and the demands and responsibilities of a fitness instructor. All teaching staff have current industry experience and are experts in their respective fields.

How will I be assessed?

A mixture of practical tutorials, project work and written tests will be used in assessing this course. Assessment is a necessary part of this program to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge set out in the competency standards. You will be informed in advance about the assessment procedure and criteria. There will also be opportunity for appeal and reassessment and this information will be provided.

What will I study?

Students study in the areas of anatomy, physiology, exercise science, fitness instruction, fitness assessment, clients and communication, sport law, occupational health and safety and activity leadership.
