Course overview
This course provides the skills and knowledge for you to become competent in a range of ICT fields at Certificate IV level. The qualification has a strong Networking base and offers pathways into Diploma of Information Technology (Networking) and Advanced Diploma of Information Technology (Network Security).

What employment opportunities will I have?
This course is designed to provide you with skills for a range of occupations such as a network administrator, network technician and a network operations engineer.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain skills and knowledge in installing and configuring a network, installing hardware and software to networked computers, monitoring and administering network security, locating system and equipment faults and building intranet.
What qualifications will I receive?
When you successfully complete this course you will be awarded the Certificate IV in Information Technology (Networking). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework, this program is nationally recognised.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
You may be able to continue on to higher level studies, such as a Diploma of Information Technology (Networking) or commence an undergraduate course such as Computer Science or Information Systems at a university.
Can I apply?
You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed VCE or an approved equivalent course and the work requirements or if you are mature aged and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months.)
How do I apply?
This course is offered through VTAC; therefore full time applications for the course must lodge their applications using the VTAC Online Application. Details of the application process can be obtained through the VTAC website or through the VTAC Guide which is available from leading newsagents and libraries in July.
Part time applicants may be required to apply directly to the Institute. Enquiries to us on 13 TAFE (13 8233).
How will I be selected for this course?
Year 12 students will be selected using their ENTER scores. All other students will be selected using an aptitude test. Satisfactory completion of a written test may also be required.
How long is the course?
One year of full time study.
Where and how can I study?
This course is available both full-time and part-time at our Broadmeadows campus.
Full-time study through the day involves approximately 20 hours per week.
Where possible, the course is also offered as 'mixed mode delivery' which is a mixture of structured classes and workshop sessions.
What costs and other fees should I expect?
Contact us on 13 TAFE (13 8233) for a fee schedule. There may be extra costs for reference books, protective clothing or specialised materials.
How will I be assessed?
You will need to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. You may be assessed by a combination of written assignments or tests, oral tests and practical assessments in class, or during a work placement. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. If needed, you will have the chance for reassessment and appeal.
