The current materials fees for 2012 is $440.00. This includes texts, a Kangan Institute polo shirt and any other associated printing. There may be extra costs for reference books, protective clothing or specialised materials.
What employment opportunities will I have?
This course will train you to work within a clinic or in your own clinic, in an aged care facility or in a health service, in a spa facility or in a palliative care facility or hospital.
You may work as a Massage Therapist, a Massage Therapy Practitioner or as an Assistant Massage Therapist. You may work in a group practice with other Health Care Practitioners, sports medicine clinics, health clubs, hospitals, resorts, fitness centres, sporting clubs and in remedial centres. If you wish, you may operate your own professional clinic.
Upon successful completion participants will be eligible to apply for some Health Fund Provider Numbers and be eligible to apply for professional Massage Therapist recognition within an Industry Association.
To be employed within the Professional Massage Industry you will need to obtain Professional Indemnity (malpractice) Insurance and most workplaces require you to be a member of a professional massage association.
You will need to talk to your massage association about the best options for obtaining Professional Indemnity (Malpractice) Insurance.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will be able to provide information to clients and assist in the provision of health care services as well provide basic counselling and maintain effective communication with clients throughout all interactions.
You will gain skills to provide administration for a clinical health practice and be able to work in a group environment, promoting and supporting a team commitment and cooperation.
You will be able to arrange referrals to other health care professionals when required and be able to communicate with a range of persons within a health care practice, using appropriate practice-specific terminology.
Once qualified, you will be able to provide first aid response, life support, and management of causalities until the arrival of medical or other assistance, in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.
You will be able to contribute to OHS processes where there is a responsibility for your own work and reduce any risks, hazards, and any associated safety practices. You will also be able to comply with infection control policies and procedures to minimize the transmission of infections from person to person.
You will be able to work effectively within a massage scope of practice providing basic massage treatment using techniques such as, Swedish massage, temperature and hydrotherapy treatments, use myofascial and stretching techniques.
The skills you gain will help you to apply deep tissue, friction, trigger point and mobilizing techniques as well as apply pre and post event sports massage techniques and apply basic remedial exercise and give basic advice on self care.
You will be able to plan a massage treatment, or a series of treatments, using the knowledge and skills you develop in interpreting and gathering health information, from observation, palpation, testing, and applying techniques.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice.
As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.
Graduates are eligible to apply for professional membership with several massage associations.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
You may continue on with your studies in the Diploma of Remedial Massage or you may like to complete your Certificate III in Fitness and Certificate IV in Fitness or enter into a Sports Trainer Course.
You may wish to continue on into other Diplomas within the Complementary and Alternative Health Care areas or you may like to complete your studies within the areas of Aged Care, Disabilities, or Nursing.
You may also wish to apply to enter into a business course to ensure you have all the skills and knowledge to successfully set up your own business.

How do I apply?
Applicants for the course starting in February 2012 must apply through VTAC at www.vtac.edu.au.
Direct entry applicants for 2012 must complete a profile form to be found at www.kangan.edu.au/departments/centre-for-better-living and send to the department by January 31st 2012.
How will I be selected for this course?
Selection is based upon application through VTAC and the application form submitted to the department. It is advisable to follow up the application by making an appointment with the course coordinator to discuss your plans.
Personal qualifications, work experience, experience and/or demonstrated interest in health care settings and sporting experience will be taken into account as well as previous academic results.
Mature age students must apply through VTAC. They are selected through personal qualifications, work experience, experience and/or demonstrated interest in health care settings and sporting experience as well as previous academic results.
How long is the course?
This is a 1 year full-time course. The current timetable has been set for students to attend class for 2 full days and a simulated workplace one night each week at the Student Clinic on campus, and a third day on occasion throughout the year. This is all subject to change for 2011.
Where and how can I study?
This course is offered at the Kangan Institute Richmond campus.
You will be required to study within the classroom, within the supervised simulated workplace student clinic, directed study away from the classroom and within external workplaces.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. There are a variety of “tools” used to assess whether students have achieved competency.
These may include:
Formal exams, open book exams, short answer tests, essays, class presentations, group projects, class participation, role-plays of simulations, fieldwork assignments, ongoing assessment, practical demonstrations, observations, and reports.
You will be advised in advance about the types of assessment and how it will be carried out.
There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with this information.
Additional comments
Students are required to massage other students and be massaged by other students in the class. As this forms part of the course assessment students who are unable to give or receive massages will not be able to pass the course and therefore should not enrol into this course.
Students who complete the Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice course may be eligible to continue into the Diploma of Remedial Massage course. The Diploma takes an extra 12 months to complete.
