Course overview
This nationally accredited course provides graduates with the mandatory entry-level qualification for work as a pathology collector of blood and other pathology specimens for routine and specialising testing.
The course is designed to provide graduates with an in-depth knowledge of collection practice, the industry standards and client complexities.

Employment opportunities include work in hospitals, pathology collection clinics, home visiting and general practice medical clinics.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain skills in pathology collection techniques, phlebotomy, infection control, customer service and work organisation.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate IV in Pathology. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
Graduates may apply for further studies in nursing.
Can I apply?

Applications for Semester 2, 2012 (Starting 25th June, 2012) are now being taken.
INFORMATION SESSIONS:
- Tuesday 15th May 2012 - 6pm sharp
- Wednesday 16th May 2012 - 2pm sharp
A minimum requirement of Senior First Aid (Level 2) is a prerequisite for this course, along with basic computer skills.
A current police and working with children check is also required.
It is also recommended that you have satisfactory numeracy and literacy skills to undertake this course or are of mature age. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 21 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months).
Please note: this course includes blood collection and students are required to have immunisation against hepatitis B. Inoculations should begin prior to the commencement of study.

All applicants MUST attend an information session and complete a written questionnaire. Selected applicants will be invited to attend an interview at a later date.
To be selected for this course you will demonstrate:
- reasonable standard of numeracy and literacy
- ability to think logically,
- good interpersonal and communication skills
- an awareness of and commitment to undertaking the course.
- Be of mature age (over the age of 21 years)
How will I be selected for this course?
You will need to attend an information session and complete a written English test. You will also be required to attend an interview.
How long is the course?
This is a full-time course of approximately 20 weeks of about 20 hours per week.
Please note that unit duration is nominal and units will be clustered for timetabling and delivery. At the end of the on-campus study all students undertake a practical placement of one week.
Where and how can I study?
This course is delivered on campus on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am - 4pm.
A full week of practical placement is scheduled in the last week of the course timetable.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There will also be opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with this information.
