This course will take you through many of the skills and strategies you will need to avoid the common pitfalls facing people in small businesses.

This course has three options.
Part-time evening class option.
Fully flexible online study option.

New Enterprise Incentive Scheme. You must be a registered jobseeker with Centrelink to qualify and have a viable business proposal to be offered this training option.

What employment opportunities will I have?

Most people who undertake this course intend to run their own small business (or are already). Self employment and small businesses are a growing trend in Australia.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

In this course you will go through the steps of:
- Preparing a business plan
- Researching and establishing your own small business
- Developing the key skills needed to manage a small business

What qualifications will I receive?

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework, this program is nationally recognised. Graduates will be awarded the Certificate IV in Small Business Management. A statement of attainment will be awarded to those who complete less than ten units.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Many graduates of this program return to continue studies in our management courses.

Can I apply?

If you fit one of the following descriptions, you are eligible to apply for the small business course:
- Have passed VCE OR an approved equivalent course
- Be mature age
- Have a business already
- Wish to test the viability of your small business idea

How do I apply?

The course is run twice a year - March and July.

Applications are accepted any time during the year. If you wish to apply for this course, you must either obtain an application form from the department on 9094 3008 or email bec@kangan.edu.au or download from www.kangan.edu.au/bec.

How will I be selected for this course?

Applicants need to complete an application form and may also be interviewed.

How long is the course?

The course is offered part-time with evening classes on Monday and Thursday for six hours a week over a period of 11 weeks. Counting home study and research, it totals about 210 hours and completes the four most popular units out of 10 required to complete the Certificate IV in Small Business Management.

The flexible online learning program has been developed to meet the needs of our busy lifestyles. A program can be individually tailored to suit your learning requirements and to develop your business idea to either start a new business or take an existing business forward.

You control your learning program with full access to course content and activities online and backed up with email and personal contact with the experienced business counsellor assigned to you.

This course is offered at the Essendon and Richmond campuses and online at

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with this information.

Additional comments

Classes are available over 11 weeks which enables completion of four core units. Individual tuition through our flexible online learning program is available to complete a further six units required to achieve the Certificate IV In Small Business Management.

The course is also available as a fully flexible online learning program which can be individually tailored to suit your learning requirements and to develop your business idea to either start a new business or take an existing business forward.

This course has a mid-year entry.
