Course overview
This course will help you launch your career in most areas of sports or recreation including coaching, after-school and holiday programs and sport trainers activities. It is also valued by people working in the industry as a means of having their skills recognised. Certificate IV is the first of the two year Diploma in Sport (Development).

The current materials fees for 2012 is $400.00. This includes texts, a Kangan Institute polo shirt and any other associated printing. There may be extra costs for reference books, protective clothing or specialised materials.
What employment opportunities will I have?
This course is designed to provide you with skills to work as a coach or sports trainer, development officer, after school activities employee and coordinator, holiday program employee and coordinator and sports facility officer.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain skills in coaching and instruction, computing and administration, sports training, marketing, sport strength and conditioning, nutrition, officiating, working with clients, problem solving and being able to plan and deliver sport sessions.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion you will be awarded the Certificate IV in Sport (Development). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. You also have the chance to qualify for the Level II First Aid Certificate, Level I Sports Trainer Certificate and various other qualifications.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
Graduates of the Certificate IV in Sport (Development) will automatically be eligible to continue into the Diploma of Sport (Development) at Kangan Institute. You may gain credits to sports and recreation related university courses including human movement, sports science, physical education, exercise science, sports/recreation management, primary or secondary teaching, sports administration or sports coaching. Graduates are eligible to apply for university entry under an alternative category to VCE graduates.
Can I apply?
You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed VCE or an approved equivalent course or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months.
How do I apply?
Applicants wishing to apply for the course starting in February 2012 must apply using the VTAC Online Application. Details of the application process can be obtained through the VTAC website www.vtac.edu.au or through the VTAC Guide which is available from newsagents.
Direct entry applicants for 2012 must complete a profile form accessible at www.kangan.edu.au/departments/centre-for-better-living/ and return it to the department by January 31st 2012.
Direct entry applications are considered for the course after the VTAC selection process is complete.
How will I be selected for this course?
Year 12 students applying through VTAC will be selected on their VCE ATAR score. It is also recommended that applicants complete a student profile form. Personal qualifications, work experience and sporting experience will be taken into account as well as previous academic results.
How long is the course?
This is a one year full-time course. A large part of the course involves on-the-job training.
Current students have attended class Monday-Thursday, 9am - 4.30pm. Please note, these days and times are subject to change.
Where and how can I study?
This course is held at the Kangan Institute Richmond campus. Some modules may be delivered flexibly.
Classes are designed to be interactive and enjoyable. Where possible, all classes are practical and innovative where teaching staff bring real life experience to the course to assist students in understanding the Sport and Recreation Industry. Practical classes are held at local recreational facilities. All staff have current industry experience and are experts in their respective fields.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods and may take place in your workplace. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate.
There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information at the time of enrolment. Students will be required to participate in department projects and programmes to enhance learning and competency understanding.
What will I study?
Students will study a variety of competencies including coaching and instructional skills, development skills, sports science, sports trainer, sport strength and conditioning, nutrition, officiating, and problem solving. Please see the competency list for the full outline.
