Course overview
This course is designed for people who would like to teach English in Australia and overseas or teachers who teach students from culturally diverse backgrounds, including international students or teachers from overseas who wish to imporve their English language teaching skills.
The course is nationally recognised and provides participants practical skills in how to teach English to speakers of other languages. The course aims to develop participants language analysis skills and awareness of cultural factors in language learning.

This course is a fee for service course and the cost is $2400 plus textbooks.
What employment opportunities will I have?
This course may lead to employment in teaching English in Australia or overseas.
The Certificate IV is recognised by the National English Teaching Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) as a minimum qualification for teaching in an ELICOS program or a Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) funded program in Australia.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain skills in planning lessons for learners at different levels in a variety of contexts. You will learn to design and adapt classroom materials, conduct lessons effectively and analyse language for teaching purposes.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speakers of Other languages (TESOL). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
This course will lead to higher level studies. Credit transfers may be available into degree or masters level.
Can I apply?
You can apply if you are at least 18 years of age, have successfully completed Year 12 or equivalent and have a good level of spoken and written English (IELTS 6.5 minimum for speakers of other languages - IELTS 7 and above preferred).
How do I apply?
To apply for this course you must fill in a direct application form which can be obtained from the institute by calling the Contact Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or email enquiries@kangan.edu.au. This course has start dates throughout the year depending on demand.
How will I be selected for this course?
All applicants will need to complete a preliminary task and undertake an interview to demonstrate their suitability for work in the TESOL field.
How long is the course?
The course spans one semester on a part-time (evening) basis.
One evening per week (three hours) as well as four Saturday sessions (10am - 4pm).
Where and how can I study?
You will study at the Essendon campus. Face-to-face delivery plus self study time is essential.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with this information.
Additional comments
There is a compulsory requirements of six hours of observation and English classes and six hours of supervised assessed teaching practice. Assistance will be provided to complete these components of the course.
