The Course in Notetaking for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People provides training for people wishing to work as notetakers for deaf and hard of hearing people in a variety of situations. Clients using notetakers may be deaf, hard of hearing or
deaf-blind.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

Contact the Customer Service Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233) 9279 2222 for a fee schedule. A small additional fee will be charged to cover class materials. You may also choose to purchase additional support materials, e.g. Auslan DVDs or CD-ROMs.

What employment opportunities will I have?

Notetakers generally provide academic support in educational institutions including VET and higher education. Notetakers may also work in community settings such as meetings, seminars, courts, counselling and mediation.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

At the completion of the Notetaking for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People course, you will have sufficient skills and knowledge to enable you to take efficient, legible notes that are easy for Deaf, deaf-blind and hard of hearing people to read and process. You will also have some familiarity with Deaf culture and a basic ability to communicate effectively with Deaf and Hard of Hearing People in Australia.

What qualifications will I receive?

On completion of this course you will receive a Certificate of Attainment.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Students who are interested may further their Auslan language skills and knowledge of working with Deaf people by studying the Certificate II in Auslan or the Diploma of Auslan.

Can I apply?

There are no prerequisites for this course. The course in Notetaking for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People is conducted on a part-time basis and is suitable if you have proficient literacy and numeracy skills.

How will I be selected for this course?

There are no specific selection criteria however participants' handwriting legibility and English proficiency will be assessed in regards to their potential to successfully complete the course.

How long is the course?

This course is run for three hours per week over 17 weeks during the second semester each year.

Where and how can I study?

Weekly classes - 5.30pm to 8.30pm.
Classes conducted on Level 1, Building A, 85 Cremorne Street, Richmond.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course syllabus. Assessment may include written, oral or practical activities. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information.

What will I study?

VPAU455 Work with deaf and hard of hearing people:
This unit provides an orientation to working with deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind people.

VPAU456 Take notes for deaf, hard of hearing and deafblind people:
This unit covers the knowledge and skills to act as a notetaker for deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind people in a variety of situations.
