What costs and other fees should I expect?

The fee schedule attached to this course is the Advanced Diploma (Skills Deepening) rate. There will be extra costs for reference books, stationery, text books, other reading materials, and travel costs associated with attending excursions and practical placements. These additional costs have been estimated at $300-$400 per year.
What employment opportunities will I have?
This course may lead to work in supervisory or management positions within the justice industry including the state or federal police forces, customs service, sheriffs department, local government, correctional services, courts, youth justice, community corrections and various non-government organisations.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain a broader understanding of the criminal justice systems, as well as skills in and an understanding of budgetary and financial procedures in the workplace as well as the ability to develop and compile complex reports, make recommendations and conduct research. You will also develop leadership and managerial skills and the ability to liaise with, and represent, the interests of your clients.
What qualifications will I receive?
When you successfully complete this course you will be awarded the Advanced Diploma of Justice. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework, this program is nationally recognised.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
Kangan Institute students who graduate with an Advanced Diploma of Justice are able to take advantage of the 'pathways' arrangement with Victoria University (VU) and RMIT. Students can receive advanced standing (credit) in the form of course credit points towards a bachelor qualification. Each university study unit carries a credit point value.
As of March 2010, students who have graduated with the Advanced Diploma of Justice can utilise advanced standing pathways in the following bachelor degrees:
- Bachelor of Arts (Criminal Justice Studies)
- Bachelor of Arts (Criminal Justice Administration)
Students may also be elegible for a pathway to the Bachelor of Applied Managment from the University of Ballarat, which can be completed in one year, delivered at Kangan Institute's Broadmeadows campus.
Can I apply?
You may apply if you have successfully completed Year 12 or equivalent. Mature aged students are also encouraged to apply.
How do I apply?
The Advanced Diploma of Justice is offered through VTAC; therefore full time applications for the course (regardless of exit points) must lodge their applications using the VTAC Online Application. Details of the application process can be obtained through the VTAC website or through the VTAC Guide which is available from leading newsagents and libraries available now.

How will I be selected for this course?
VTAC applicants will be selected on the basis of their ATAR scores.
All non VTAC applicants need to attend an information session and complete a written test.
How long is the course?
The Advanced Diploma of Justice is a 2 year full time course, with exit points available at 12 (Certificate IV) months and 18 months (Diploma) for eligible students. This course is also offered on a part-time basis, with length of course negotiated.
Where and how can I study?
Classes are offered at the Broadmeadows and Essendon campuses. Students are expected to attend classes on campus and participate in off-campus excursions. Whilst most classes are scheduled during business hours, some classes may be conducted in the evening.
How will I be assessed?
You will need to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. You may be assessed by a combination of written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. If required, you will have the chance for re-assessment and appeal.
Additional comments
Non-VTAC applicants need to attend an Information Session. These sessions will cover course requirements, fees, timetables and an entrance test. Teachers will be presenting during these information sessions.
The course will commence on the 13th of February, 2012
VTAC applicants are welcome to attend one of the sessions for further information; however they will be required to attend a post enrolment information session.
Information session would be held on Thursday, 9 February 2012 at 9:15 am at the Broadmeadows Campus Room B112.
