Course overview

Auslan is the recognised language of Deaf people in Australia. it is based on distinct spatial movements called "signs", including shapes made by hands and arms, with meaning emphasised by eyes, facial expression and body posture.
The Diploma of Auslan is a comprehensive study of Auslan, Deaf culture and topics related to the Australian Deaf community. It aims to encourage students to a level of Auslan proficiency that would, with appropriate training, allow them to work as a professional within the Deaf community.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course will train you for assisting professionals working with Deaf people. Further study will enable you to work as an interpreter, teacher of the Deaf, welfare worker, advocacy worker, employment consultant or community worker.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain sufficient proficiency in Auslan to work professionally within the Australian Deaf community and will have sufficient knowledge of Deaf culture, Auslan linguistics, Deaf history and a variety of other significant topics to enable you to pursue further Deaf-related study.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Diploma of Auslan. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Credit transfers may be available into the Diploma of Interpreting (Auslan/English) at a number of Institutes. Entry may also be available into under-graduate, graduate and post graduate courses offering Auslan. Those who already hold a Bachelor of Education may gain entry into Universities who offer the Teacher of the Deaf postgraduate course.

Can I apply?

Applicants should have literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to the Certificate in General Education for Adults Level 3 Reading and Writing, demonstrate a willingness to work in small groups, have good visual memory and manual dexterity and can outline their career goals within the Deaf community.

How do I apply?

Full-time applicants commencing at the beginning of the year must contact the Auslan and Deaf Studies Centre on 9425 5777 to be registered on a database by mid October.

Full-time applicants for the course must apply through VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre) by 30 September using the VTAC Online Application at www.vtac.edu.au.

To apply for the mid-year intake, please contact the Auslan and Deaf Studies Centre by the end of April each year. Enquiries to the Contact Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233), email: enquiries@kangan.edu.au.

How will I be selected for this course?

All applicants need to attend an interview. You will be asked to complete a spelling assessment, write a one-page essay, complete a visual memory and manual dexterity activity and meet with two teachers.
They will be looking for applicants who display some knowledge of the course and of the Deaf community and know how the course will assist them to achieve their vocational goals. An interpreter will be provided for the interview. Prior skill using Auslan is NOT required.

How long is the course?

This is a two year full-time course.

Where and how can I study?

Classes will be conducted at the Richmond campus. Students attend classes between 9am to 3pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Some modules will also be offered on Wednesdays for students in their final semester of study.
Students are required to attend several excursions, including one Auslan Only weekend camp each year.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

Contact the Contact Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233) for a fee schedule. There will be extra costs for two text books and you will also have to contribute toward the cost of excursions from time to time. Auslan & Deaf Studies Centre staff can provide you with a breakdown of Materials Fees.

How will I be assessed?

You will need to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. You may be assessed by a combination of practical tutorials, project work, written tests, role-plays, signed presentations in front of class members and video work. You will be informed in advance about the assessment procedure and criteria. There will also be opportunity for appeal and reassessment and you will be provided with this information.
