This course aims to provide students with the technical knowledge linked with employability skills to monitor and to oversee all the quality aspects related to the construction of Domestic, Industrial and Commercial Buildings of medium /rise to a maximum height of three stories.

Student Contact Hours

Diploma and advanced diploma students are no longer eligible for a concession or exemption of tuition fees however VET FEE HELP is available to eligible students. Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander students can continue accessing concession rates at all program levels (including diploma and advanced diploma).

If you have to undertake training as part of Skills Recognition, your tuition fees are charged according to the applicable rate per Student Contact Hour depending on your eligibility for government subsidised, Indigenous concession or full fees. The course is designed to provide participants with skills, knowledge and attitudes that will complement an extensive knowledge of the Building Industry assisting in the development of a highly skilled and flexible workforce with the ability to make informed choices for future career paths.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Diploma of Building and Construction. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

Can I apply?

To be eligible, you must have successfully completed year 12 (or the equivalent) or be of mature age, and possess sufficient literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete the study.

How do I apply?

You can register your intention to enrol via VTAC by accessing the VTAC online application facility at www.vtac.edu.au
You can also fill out a direct entry form obtainable from Customer Service Centre on 9279 2222.

The Building Department will then process your application and contact you to arrange an interview.

How will I be selected for this course?

You will need to attend an interview and complete a pre-enrolment comprehension, literacy and numeracy test.

How long is the course?

This is a 2 year full-time course.

You will study at the Broadmeadows campus

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written tests, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with this information.

Additional comments

This course involves very little manual lifting tasks. The course offers excellent opportunities for women to enter the construction industry. The course is equally suitable for such positions as building technical advisors (managers), consultants, builders (project managers), and assistants.

What will I study?

The course structure consists of competency standards related to the Construction of Domestic/ Industrial and Commercial Building of medium rise to a maximum height of 3 stories.

You will study Construction Details Building Codes and Standards, Costing, Structural principles, Quality, Management Services, OHS and many other related components within the Building Industry. Your knowledge will be underpinned by site visits and online surveys.
