Course overview
This course is designed to give students knowledge and skills in community development, casework and group work. It prepares students to work as social welfare workers in the community service industry. This course provides students with an understanding of human rights, cultural inclusion, indigenous culture / issues and strategies for effective service delivery.

Diploma and advanced diploma students are no longer eligible for a concession or exemption of tuition fees however VET FEE HELP is available to eligible students. Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander students can continue accessing concession rates at all program levels (including diploma and advanced diploma).
If you have to undertake training as part of Skills Recognition, your tuition fees are charged according to the applicable rate per Student Contact Hour depending on your eligibility for government subsidised, Indigenous concession or full fees. What employment opportunities will I have?
This course will train students for employment as a professional social welfare worker. You may seek employment in local, state and federal government departments or in a range of family and community service agencies. Graduates may work with individuals, family groups and communities.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
Students will develop basic skills in casework, counselling, case management, community development and group work. The course is designed to ensure a balance between theory and practice in social welfare work.
What qualifications will I receive?
Upon successful completion of this course you will be awarded the Diploma of Community Services Work. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework, this program is nationally recognised. Students also have the option of studying the Diploma of Community Services Work concurrently with the Diploma of Community Development. On successful completion of both courses, students will be awarded the Diploma of Community Services Work and the Diploma of Community Development.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
Students may be eligible to receive credits in social work degrees at most universities including VUT and Deakin University. Credit transfer into the TAFE Diploma of Community Development is also an option.
Can I apply?
Applicants must demonstrate maturity for the work in the community services field and must have also undertaken paid or unpaid community work. If you are a student transferring from another institution you will need to sit an interview to discuss referees, academic history and relevant experience.
All applicants are required to attend an information session prior to selection into this course.

Applicants will also need to submit two written references from a person who works in the community services field, has some community standing, or knows the applicant well (not close friends or relatives).

How will I be selected for this course?
Applicants need to attend a course information and interview session, as above, and then submit an application form with two written references.
Applicants also need to attend a selection interview which dates will be provided at the information session. Selection will be partially based on the applicant's life experience, maturity and understanding of social justice issues. Interview dates and times will be provided at the information session.
How long is the course?
This course is two years full-time (4 days per week) OR three years part-time (Wednesday 1.30pm - 9pm, plus some flexible workbooks).
There is a practical placement requirement of 200 hours in first year and 220 hours in second year.
Where and how can I study?
Classes are held at Broadmeadows campus and in community based learning environments. Students will also undertake practical placement at the end of the first and second year.

How will I be assessed?
Students will need to show that they have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Students may be assessed by a combination of written assignments or tests, oral tests and practical assessments in class or during a work placement. Students will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and the how it will operate. If needed, you will have the chance for reassessment and appeal.

What will I study?
The course emphasises developing the student's understanding of the structures of our society and on the impact of the student's own values and self awareness on their practice. Students will study: group work, casework, psychology, sociology, counselling, social policy, research, legal issues. Each subject area comprises off-the-job, (classroom-based) and on-the-job (workplace-based) learning.
