This course is designed to be both an entry level qualification in fashion design and related skills as well as a qualification providing skills for employment as an advanced patternmaker and garment technician. Work experience in the industry is a mandatory component of this course.

Student Contact Hours

Diploma and advanced diploma students are no longer eligible for a concession or exemption of tuition fees however VET FEE HELP is available to eligible students. Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander students can continue accessing concession rates at all program levels (including diploma and advanced diploma).

If you have to undertake training as part of Skills Recognition, your tuition fees are charged according to the applicable rate per Student Contact Hour depending on your eligibility for government subsidised, Indigenous concession or full fees. What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may lead to employment as a Fashion Designer, Patternmaker, Grader, Assistant Production Manager, Quality Controller or Garment Technician.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills in fashion design and illustration, garment construction, patternmaking - flat and draping, grading, production planning and processes, fabric and fibre properties, quality, specifications, sourcing, production costing, sample cutting, block development and basic computer-aided design and pattern applications.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

This course will lead to higher level studies at Advanced Diploma level. Credit transfers may be available into the Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology and; Diploma of Fashion and Textile Merchandising.

Can I apply?

You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed VCE or an approved equivalent course and the satisfactory completion of the work requirements (eligibility to transfer); or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months.)

How do I apply?

This course has a mid-year intake. Mid-year intake is via direct application only. If you wish to apply for this course, you must obtain an application form from the Institute. This course is offered through VTAC for the February intake; therefore full time applications for the February course intake must lodge their applications using the VTAC Online Application. Details of the application process can be obtained through the VTAC website or through the VTAC Guide which is available on-line and from leading newsagents and libraries in July.

How will I be selected for this course?

All applicants will need to attend a pre-selection interview.

How long is the course?

The course spans 2 years full-time (students may be enrolled into Certificate IV for part of the diploma duration) of 1940 nominal hours.

Where and how can I study?

You will study at the Richmond campus.
Full-time course runs four days per week over two years.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information.

Applications for mid-year entry open on 1st March 2013, with the course commencing from July 22nd.

Pre-selection interview: Present samples of work, a resume and complete a questionaire, at an appointed time.

Applications for February 2014 must be made through VTAC - www.vtac.edu.au
Pre-selection interview - YR12: Present a folio, 1-3 garments and resume at an appointed time.

Pre-selection interview - NYR12: Present a folio, 1-3 garments and resume and sit a language literacy and numeracy test, at an appointed time.

Successful applicants who do not hold a Certificate III in Applied Fashion Design and Technology or an approved equivalent course will be required to enrol into an approved program alongside the diploma.

What will I study?

Mandatory units:
Follow defined OHS policies and procedures; Identify fibres and fabrics; Modify patterns to create basic styles; Draw and interpret a basic sketch; Identify fabric performance and handling requirements; Identify design process for fashion design; Apply design studio process; Interact and network with fashion industry participants; Develop product specifications for fashion design

Specialist units:
Develop patterns from a block using basic patternmaking principles; Draw a trade drawing for fashion design; Calculate cost estimates for fashion products; Conduct quality assurance for patterns and garments; Construct stock size block for garment to meet size and fit specifications; Create pattern to meet design specifications applying advanced patternmaking principles; Cut fabrics for prototype design; Grade 2D patterns; Create pattern from block to meet customer specifications; Sew design prototypes; Develop/present design concepts within specified guidelines; Use and apply sizing systems appropriate for fashion design; Use electronic fashion tools; Drape fabric to make patterns; Analyse fit model; Cost design production; Produce fashion illustrations; Construct complex blocks for fashion garments; Develop patterns for complex fashion garments; Grade shaped patterns; Develop and present design concepts within specified guidelines; Perform sample machining of bespoke garments; Assemble and fit commercially tailored or bespoke garments; Develop and present design concepts within specified guidelines; Develop patterns from a block using basic patternmaking principles and; Measure, lay up and cut commercially tailored garments.
