Course overview

The course is specifically for people wanting to develop electronic media for instructional or entertainment purposes. This includes digital video, animation, 3D models, interactive information applications and DVDs. Course work is delivered in classrooms and workshops with projects making the bulk of the assessment. You must successfully complete the Certificate IV before progressing to the diploma.

What employment opportunities will I have?

Employment opportunities will be found developing educational media for instructional design, making interactive presentations for marketing or developing 3D graphics and models for the computer games industry.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will be able to design and create a wide range of digital media for distribution in a variety of technologies. Digital media you create will be: digital photographs; illustrations, 2D animation, interactive digital video, 3D models and animation. You will also develop skills in concept development, storyboarding, presentation of ideas and creative writing.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Diploma in Interactive Digital Media. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

This course will lead to higher level studies at Advanced Diploma level. Credit transfers may be available into graphic arts courses or Bachelor Degrees at universities.

Can I apply?

There are no set prerequisites for this course. However, it is recommended that you satisfactorily complete Certificate IV in Interactive Digital Media or an approved equivalent course.

How do I apply?

To apply for a full-time position for this course, you must apply through VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre). Details of the VTAC application process are available from the VTAC website at www.vtac.edu.au and in the VTAC Guide which is available from leading newsagents and libraries in July each year. Direct application will be considered once the VTAC places have been offered and there are vacancies in the course. Contact us on 13 TAFE (13 8233).

How will I be selected for this course?

Selection is through interview and presentation of original folio work. Preference is given to applicants who have successfully completed a Certificate IV in Interactive Digital Media or equivalent course.

How long is the course?

The course runs 1 year full-time. Part time attendance is by negotiation. Part-time study can take up to 2 years.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information.

Additional comments

Course structure is delivered in 6 week blocks. Students will only need to study 3 subjects per week. Each subject is delivered twice a week. The aim of this structure is to reduce work load and enable students to complete the course in a shorter time if needed.
