What costs and other fees should I expect?

The fee schedule attached to this course is at the Advanced Diploma (Skills Deepening) rate. There will be extra costs for reference books, stationery, text books, other reading materials, and travel costs associated with attending excursions and practical placements. These additional costs have been estimated at $300-$400 per year.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course will train you for work within the justice industry. This includes the state or federal police forces, customs service, sheriffs department, local government, correctional services, courts, youth justice, community corrections and various non-government organisations.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will build on the skills and knowledge you developed in the units contained in the Certificate IV in Justice. You will further develop your research skills and ability to understand, interpret and apply the law, as well as manage conflict and supervise staff in a number of justice-related occupations.

What qualifications will I receive?

When undertaking the Advanced Diploma of Justice and you successfully complete all the units in the Certificate IV in Justice and Diploma in Justice you may be eligible for this qualification, subject to Skills Victoria eligibility criteria. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework, this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Students can continue their units in the Advanced Diploma of Justice to attain that qualification.

Can I apply?

You cannot apply directly for the Diploma in Justice; you can only apply through the Advanced Diploma of Justice. Once you have successfully completed all of the Certificate IV and Diploma Modules you may exit the course with this qualification, if you meet the eligibility criteria under Skills Reform.

How do I apply?

The Advanced Diploma of Justice is offered through VTAC; therefore full time applications for the course (regardless of exit points) must lodge their applications using the VTAC Online Application. Details of the application process can be obtained through the VTAC website or through the VTAC Guide which is available from leading newsagents and libraries available now.

This course has a mid-year intake, and is taking enquiries for this now. Information Sessions will begin in May and selection shortly after.

How will I be selected for this course?

Year 12 students will be selected using their ATAR scores.

All other students will be selected after attendance at an information session and a written test.

How long is the course?

The Advanced Diploma of Justice is a 2 year full-time course, with exit points available at 12 months (Certificate IV) and 18 months (Diploma). For eligible students, this course is also offered on a part-time basis, with length of course negotiated.

Where and how can I study?

Classes are offered at the Broadmeadows and Essendon campus. Students are expected to attend classes on campus and participate in off-campus excursions. Whilst most classes are scheduled during business hours, some classes may be conducted in the evening.

How will I be assessed?

You will need to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. You may be assessed by written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. If needed, you will have the chance for reassessment and appeal.

Additional comments

Non-VTAC applicants need to attend an Information Session. These sessions will cover course requirements, fees, timetables and an entrance test. Teachers will be presenting during these information sessions.

The Information session is held on Thursday, 9 February 2012 at 9:15 am at the Broadmeadows Campus (Room B112).

Classes will commence on the 13th of February.
