Course overview

This course is designed for:

* Any complimentary and alternative medicine practitioner who wishes to add the knowledge and skills of a TCM remedial massage therapist to their scope of practice.

* Any health care professional who wishes to add the knowledge and skills of a TCM remedial massage therapist to their scope of practice.

* Any massage therapist, remedial therapist or myotherapist who wish to add the knowledge and skills of a TCM remedial massage therapist to their scope of practice.

* Any person wishing to enter into the field of complimentary and alternative medicine via the Traditional Chinese Medicine Remedial Massage pathway

This qualification provides skills in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Remedial Massage (An Mo Tui Na) as well as specialist skills in treatment for women and children and in traumatology treatment. Holders of this qualification may also work in conjunction with practitioners qualified in other TCM areas of practice.

The current materials fees for 2012 is $280.00. This includes texts and any other associated printing. There may be extra costs for reference books, protective clothing or specialised materials.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may lead to employment in any Complimentary and Alternative Medicine Clinic, TCM Clinic, Massage Clinic, Remedial Massage Clinic, Myotherapy Clinic; work with other Health Care Professionals or self employment.

Occupational titles may include:
- TCM remedial massage practitioner
- Chinese remedial massage practitioner
- TCM remedial massage therapist
- Tui Na practitioner

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills in applying and performing TCM remedial massage health assessment, providing TCM remedial massage treatment for women and children as well carrying out traumatology treatment, planning TCM treatment strategies, whilst working within the TCM remedial massage framework for Tui Na therapists.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the HLT50107 Diploma of Traditional Chinese Medicine Remedial Massage (An Mo Tui Na). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

This course will lead to higher level studies within the Advanced Diploma of Remedial Massage (Myotherapy). Credit transfers may be available into HLT40307 Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice, HLT41207 Certificate IV in Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultation and HLT50307 Diploma of Remedial Massage.

Can I apply?

There are no set prerequisites for this course. However it is recommended that you have satisfactory numeracy and literacy skills to undertake this course or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course.

OR

You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed VCE or an approved equivalent course and the satisfactory completion of the work requirements (eligibility to transfer); or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months.)

How will I be selected for this course?

All applicants will need to demonstrate a desire or commitment to embracing a healthy lifestyle.

Preference will be given to applicants who have completed the Student Profile Application Form.

Further preference will be given to applicants who have completed an Introduction to Massage course of approximately 18 hours.

How long is the course?

The course spans two years. Three class days per week for 32 weeks over 10 months (February to November) with one additional class day per week for 32 weeks over 10 months (February to November) in the following year.

Where and how can I study?

You will study at the Richmond campus. Specialisation classes are delivered on Tuesday evenings and Thursdays and common subjects are delivered on Wednesdays. Please note, these days are subject to change.

Do you have to attend all classes?

Yes, if you are new to the Industry and have no prior background in the health industry.

No, if you have already completed the common subjects via another course, you do not have to attend on Wednesdays. You may apply for credit transfer or Recognition of Prior Learning/Recognition of Current Competency.

Do I have to attend Industry Practical Placement?

Yes, you will need to spend time working with a mentor or prospective employer within Industry during your studies.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with this information.

Additional comments

Persons who have already completed the common subjects will be entitled to credit transfer or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competency.
