Course overview
This course is designed for those seeking positions as specialist visual merchandisers in the retail industry. It is suitable for those wishing to work as a member of a retail store based visual merchandising team installing visual merchandising displays or those seeking self employment as a freelance visual merchandiser.
Kangan has a partnership with a well known department store and students will participate in up to six weeks workplacement in various stores.

What employment opportunities will I have?
This course may lead to employment as a retail store visual merchandiser, visual merchandising manager, photographic stylist, freelance visual merchandiser, exhibition/event display designer etc.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
A strong emphasis is placed on product and branding strategies for retail. You will gain skills in the designing, planning and implementation of visual merchandising concepts. You will explore colour theory, graphics, drawing, multimedia and learn how to design and construct safe and effective props and displays.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Diploma of Visual Merchandising. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.
Can I apply?
There are no set prerequisites for this course. However it is recommended that you have satisfactory numeracy and literacy skills to undertake this course or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course.
OR
You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed VCE or an approved equivalent course and the satisfactory completion of the work requirements (eligibility to transfer); or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months.)
How do I apply?
This course is offered through VTAC; therefore full-time applications for the course must lodge their applications using the VTAC Online Application. Details of the application process can be obtained through the VTAC website or through the VTAC Guide which is available from leading newsagents and libraries in July.

This course has a direct mid-year intake.
How will I be selected for this course?
All applicants will need to undertake a selection interview and will need to bring the following: an academic transcript, studio/arts folio and a reference from an employer, course coordinator or head of school.
How long is the course?
The course spans over 18 months at four days a week on campus.
Where and how can I study?
This course runs at the Richmond campus 4 days a week. Participants will have access to a new state of the art studio workroom facility, a simulated retail store, flexible learning environment and library.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment may include completion of workbooks, projects, presentations, demonstrations, displays and workplacement. All assessment requirements are explained up front and throughout the course.
Additional comments
Work placement is a requirement of this program and will be conducted in 2 week blocks.
An open evening is scheduled for Wednesday 31 August from 6pm - 9pm and another Open Day is scheduled on September 3rd from 10am - 3pm.
