Course overview
As a student in this program you will complete a pre-apprenticeship in Automotive and have skills to find a job and know how to work. As part of the Personal Development strand, students work together to design and sometimes build a vehicle. The VCAL is a senior school certificate that focuses on hands-on learning and practical skills. With the VCAL you can go on to further education, training or employment. The VCAL has three levels - Foundation, Intermediate and Senior. This program is at the Intermediate/Senior VCAL level.

What employment opportunities will I have?
Your skills will make you eligible to apply for work as an automotive apprentice.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will have completed part of the theory component of the automotive apprenticeship. You should have also a range of skills which would increase your employability including automotive electrical, motor mechanic, vehicle painting, panel beating or spare parts industries skills, literacy and numeracy skills, problem solving, organisational and planning skills, general knowledge and interpersonal skills.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion you will be awarded the the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning at the Intermediate/Senior level and a Certificate II in Automotive Technology.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
Graduates will be eligible to enrol in certificate III programs in automotive. Kangan Institute offers the full range of certificate IV and diploma level automotive courses.
Can I apply?
Applicants need to enrol first in the Certificate II in Automotive.
How do I apply?
Entry to this program is via the Certificate II in Automotive. Students will be interviewed.
How will I be selected for this course?
To apply for the Certificate II in Automotive, applicants need to attend an information session. These are held every Monday at 1pm. You may also be interviewed. For further information please call 9353 1836.
How long is the course?
The course is run over three semesters.

The Automotive VCAL course is run at the Coburg Campus
How will I be assessed?
You might be assessed by demonstration, written work, projects, finished products, case studies and log books. Assessment is a necessary part of this program, to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge set out in the competency standards. You will be informed in advance about the assessment procedure and criteria. There will also be an opportunity for appeal and reassessment and you will be given this information.

What will I study?
The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning is made up of 4 strands - Literacy and numeracy - Personal development - Industry related skills - Work related skills. A VCAL program is made up of a minimum of 10 units from the four VCAL strands, each involving 100 hours study.
